DSM’s probiotics get NDI status from FDA, extending end-to-end range in North America
18 Feb 2022 --- Royal DSM has announced two of its probiotic strains received New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is “good news” for DSM’s partners. The Netherlands-based health giant’s Lactobacillus rhamnosus 19070-2 and Lactobacillus reuteri 12246-CU signal continued investment in gut health solutions.
“Both strains were identified as among the best performing probiotic varieties – out of a total of 47 – by a large and comprehensive screening program,” says the company.
“Both strains, for example, demonstrated excellent pH tolerance and adhesion properties to enable passage through the gastrointestinal tract and strong antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria,” affirms Penny Antonopoulos, DSM’s director of dietary supplements, human nutrition & care for North America.
DSM says the new status bolsters its capabilities as an end-to-end partner for customers in the North American region.
The move provides North American supplements brands with new solutions to seize upon the “booming” gut health trend.
The two Lactobacillus strains
According to DSM, its probiotic strains have demonstrated multiple clinically-proven benefits to gut health when combined. These benefits include improved digestive comfort and a reduction in negative gut health phenomena such as diarrhea.
The strains are already commercially available in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
According to Jill Porter, DSM’s global director for gut health and dietary supplements, the company’s expanding global presence in the gut health market signifies their intentions for continued investment in the trending category.
The FDA issued NDI status for the ingredients without objection. She says the trend has been driven by changing consumer mindsets.
Consumers also look to probiotics to support immune health, with DSM reporting a rising demand for nutrition products making immunity claims in 2021.
67% of consumers take action to support gut health
DSM has noted a rising trend toward gut health for some time. In 2021, DSM released the results of its Consumer Health Study, which surveyed close to 19,000 consumers in 24 countries.
The study uncovered a rising focus on digestive health. The survey revealed that 61% of global consumers are now concerned about gut health.
Importantly for manufacturers and DSM’s end-to-end partners, 67% of respondents said they take action to support their gut health, indicating a healthy market for gut health solutions.
To keep ahead of the trend, DSM’s probiotic strains are now available in the US, one of the most powerful consumer markets in the world.
In 2021, a survey released by Kerry found consumers are increasingly turning to probiotics to support immune health and digestive function.
Last March, DSM investigated the use of human milk oligosaccharides to support gut health.
