Natural biotech solutions: Spotlight on next-gen nutritional ingredients

The natural ingredients sector is undergoing rapid transformation, fueled by shifting consumer demands, regulatory developments, and advances in ingredient science and technology. As health-conscious consumers increasingly seek clean label, plant-based, and sustainably sourced products, the supplement and nutrition industry is responding with a wave of innovation to meet these expectations without compromising efficacy or scalability.

From novel extraction methods and bioavailability-enhancing technologies to the rise of regionally sourced botanicals and precision-formulated blends, the natural ingredients market is redefining the boundaries of what’s possible. We examine the key trends and emerging innovations driving growth and differentiation in the sector — and how forward-thinking brands and manufacturers can stay ahead in an increasingly competitive landscape.

“The European and North American markets are leading in naturalness, thanks to high consumer awareness and favorable regulations,” says Bruno Dedeurwaerdere, market segment manager, nutra, EMEA, at Azelis. “Vegetable extracts with clinical studies are very trendy, as customers need to know what they buy and get proof of product efficiency. 

Dedeurwaerdere also notes that biotechnological advancements are enabling the replacement of synthetic or animal-derived ingredients with more natural alternatives.

Andrew Hunt, the co-founder and CEO of Aduna Superfoods, points out that the growing, worldwide movement to embrace the concept of “food as medicine” and turn away from ultra-processed, artificial “food-like” products is becoming commonplace.

“Consumers are coming full circle and ‘discovering’ some of the most ancient, nutritious whole food ingredients on the planet, which have been used for thousands of years for various medicinal purposes,” Hunt reveals. “African botanical ingredients like baobab, which is a prehistoric species, sit firmly within this.”

Aduna Superfoods touts its latest range of superfood blends that target digestive, immune, energy, skin, and cognitive health.Dr. Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, the business development director at TriNutra, notes that natural ingredients are trending in all nutrition categories.

“It goes without saying that the dietary supplements, food and beverage, as well as cosmetics industries, are excelling in the natural category,” she says. “Other markets, such as the pet health space, are also gaining traction by incorporating more natural supplementation; however, there remains a significant opportunity for pet brands to incorporate innovative, clinically studied, natural ingredients into their products.”

Natural African ingredient innovations

Aduna highlights that the company introduced nutrient-dense African superfoods — baobab, moringa, and fonio — to the UK, establishing direct supply chains with smallholder farmers. Hunt says the company provides these bulk ingredients to global manufacturers and retailers to deliver functional health benefits while supporting sustainable livelihoods and land restoration.

“Our latest innovation is the launch of Aduna Superfood Blends — a range of functional, nutritionist-approved blends,” Hunt explains. “The focus of our innovation here is on the sustainability side, as it is the world’s first FairWild and People & Planet First certified superfood range, meeting consumer demand for products that deliver on both health and sustainability.”

“Each blend contains 20–45% baobab, a delicious, functional fruit powder that delivers vitamin C, fiber, and prebiotics, while creating income for over 3,300 women in Ghana and Burkina Faso and supporting land regeneration.”

Aduna’s latest range includes five blends to target digestive, immune, energy, skin, and cognitive health. These are:

• Good Gut with baobab, chamomile, and flax for digestive support.
• Super Greens with moringa, chlorella, and spirulina for immunity, energy, and gut health.
• Energy with baobab, maca, guarana, and matcha to fight fatigue naturally.
• Radiance with hibiscus, nettle, and goji to support skin health.
• Mind with cacao, lion’s mane, and reishi to help de-stress and focus.

Black seed oil breakthroughs

Using modern sustainable methods, TriNutra has harnessed the potential of the 2,000-year-old Nigella sativa seed oil, or black seed oil. Traditionally a commodity, TriNutra transformed it into ThymoQuin, a clinically studied specialty ingredient marketed exclusively worldwide. ThymoQuin is the only US Pharmacopoeia-compliant, proprietary, cold-pressed, and standardized premium black seed oil available.

Von Oppen-Bezalel highlights that TriNutra also operates a Nigella sativa breeding program in Israel to cultivate high-thymoquinone, non-GMO varieties yielding 2–3 times more compound.TriNutra says its Nigella sativa seed oil extraction process produces high thymoquinone content with low free fatty acids.

She notes that most competitors use CO2 or solvent extraction to boost thymoquinone and adds that these methods strip full-spectrum components, elevate free fatty acid levels, and compromise oil purity. However, she asserts that TriNutra’s preservation-focused approach ensures full-spectrum integrity.

“Thanks to optimal growing conditions and the selective breeding of varieties, along with a proprietary cold-press extraction process, ThymoQuin preserves the full spectrum of black seed oil while maintaining extremely low levels of free fatty acids and standardized high levels of its key active — thymoquinone,” Von Oppen-Bezalel underscores. “As a result, ThymoQuin offers higher potency, purity, and bioavailability compared to other black seed oils on the market.

“Free fatty acids form in black seed oil because of oxidation during extraction and processing, and too-high free fatty acid levels can deplete the thymoquinone efficacy, making the oil rancid and less effective,” she says. “By using fresh seeds and having complete control over the initial planting through to extraction and storage, TriNutra maintains ThymoQuin’s thymoquinone content (3%), as well as its extremely low free fatty acid content, which is below 1.25%.”

“In contrast, other black seed oils contain 6%-20%. This results in improved purity and optimal benefit efficacy. In addition, having every step of the supply chain — from the field to the bottle — in one place ensures traceability, consistency, and complete control of product quality.”

Effective and innovative

Dedeurwaerdere spotlights that Azelis demonstrates how Gellane — a natural hydrocolloid produced by fermentation — can suspend insoluble powders in liquids, unlocking novel delivery formats. In pharmaceutical and nutraceutical terms, “galenic” denotes the science of designing and formulating dosage forms.

These nutraceutical galenic innovations offer consumers more appealing and effective ways to ingest active ingredients.

“Azelis handles safety stock in Europe, takes positions on top products, and commits contracts with customers to ensure price stability,” he says. “Monitoring plans and a strong regulatory service also warrant the compliance of our product offers.”

“We work closely with local producers to ensure traceability and quality of ingredients. The main challenges include low visibility and managing risks related to the fast-changing context due to the current US duty policies and the need to maintain strong relationships with suppliers.”

At the same time, Dedeurwaerdere says numerous natural ingredients present promising alternatives for promoting health and well-being. Plant extracts rooted in Indian Ayurvedic traditional medicine, such as Boswellia serrata and holy basil, are gaining traction as new research highlights their valuable properties.Azelis highlights that its nutraceutical galenic innovations offer consumers effective ways to ingest active ingredients.

“Synthetic ingredients such as artificial colorings, chemical sweeteners, and synthetic preservatives are increasingly avoided by consumers,” he attests. “The growing demand for natural products and awareness of the harmful effects of these ingredients on health are pushing companies to seek healthier and more natural alternatives.”

Tackling future challenges

Aduna’s Hunt says that this shift away from synthetic ingredients reflects consumers’ heightened health awareness and a preference for cleaner labels. As shoppers grow more informed about potential risks, demand surges for products formulated without these artificial components, prompting brands to remove them from their offerings.

Moreover, he points out that industry players, responding to consumer demand and regulatory pressure, actively seek healthier alternatives. Fermentation technologies, biotech advancements, and innovative formulation methods facilitate the creation of potent natural substitutes.

Such scientific progress not only matches the functional performance of synthetic additives but also supports sustainability objectives and meets rising expectations for clean label products.

“We’ve also introduced cooperative savings schemes and financial literacy training, enabling long-term financial resilience,” Hunt reveals. “Our adherence to Ecocert, Soil Association, and FairWild standards ensures best-in-class sustainability and safety throughout the chain — climate change is our biggest challenge, impacting the harvesting season and quality of the fruit.”

Hunt concludes that the company applies the same model to fonio — an ancient grain — by partnering with a small-scale producer in West Africa. He points out that for Aduna, sourcing transcends mere procurement as the company moves to foster a scalable, regenerative ecosystem where business growth drives tangible social and environmental benefits.
