Arla Foods Ingredients unveils dry-blend MFGM to save energy and formula production cost
15 Sep 2021 --- Arla Foods Ingredients has unveiled Lacprodan Premium MFGM-10, a dry-blend version of its milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) ingredient. It is marketed as allowing infant formula manufacturers to reduce energy usage and production costs without compromising on safety or quality.
It also provides greater flexibility to produce more recipes from one base powder.
“MFGM is a key ingredient for the global formula market,” says Niels Joakim Karlsen, pediatric sales development manager at Arla Foods Ingredients.
By offering Lacprodan MFGM-10 in a dry blend form, the company is combining the clinically proven benefits of this ingredient with opportunities to lower its environmental footprint, he continues.
The dry-blending process requires particularly high microbiological compliance throughout the entire ingredient batch, which ensures consistent quality and product safety.
Therefore, Lacprodan Premium MFGM-10 is free from Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacterium that can cause severe infections in infants.
Lacprodan MFGM-10 was the first MFGM ingredient for the global infant formula market. It is rich in phospholipids and gangliosides. The Smart Mama drink containing MFGM was previously launched by the company.
Arla Food Ingredients’ previous moves
Arla Foods Ingredients also offers dry-blend lactose, which has helped manufacturers significantly reduce their energy usage. In November 2020, the company estimated total CO2 savings from customers using it to be as high as 24,400 metric tons.
In February, Arla Food Ingredients launched Lacprodan Premium ALPHA-10, a lactalbumin protein dry blend product that helped infant formula manufacturers reduce production costs.
In June, the company introduced a whey protein hydrolysate ingredient, WPH Lacprodan DI-3091, that allows patients with maldigestion or malabsorption to overcome taste issues.
The company also launched Lacprodan SoftBar, which helps manufacturers produce protein bars that provide a healthier option without sacrificing functionality.
Infant formula and MFGM
MFGM is found naturally in breast milk and is comprised of phospholipids, glycolipids, proteins and glycoproteins. MFGM ingredients made from whey were introduced into the infant category to ensure that infants can still benefit from the critical components of MFGM if breastfeeding is not possible.
Last week, Bunge Loders Croklaan released Betapol Organic, an Oleic-Palmitic-Oleic or SN-2 palmitate (OPO) for infant milk formula, into the Chinese and EU markets. It is certified as organic.
A Chr. Hansen study found a blend of 2’-fucosyllactose, 3-fucosyllactose, lacto-N-tetraose, 3’-sialyllactose and 6’-sialyllactose is safe and tolerable in infant formula. These are the most prominent Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs).
