Activ’Inside’s brain-boosting polyphenol effective at lower dosages, experts tout
21 Jun 2023 --- As research continues to reveal that consumers are increasingly looking for ways to boost their brain health and support, maintain or increase their cognitive abilities, Activ’Inside unveils new findings on the efficacy of its polyphenol-packed blueberry and grape extract, Memophenol for cognitive health.
Memephenol is the result of a four-year research program that demonstrated its ability to enhance cognition in healthy 18 to 25-year-olds and combat age-related cognitive decline in 60 to 70-year-olds at a dosage of 600 mg per day. The ingredient has also been shown to increase cerebral blood flow. The new study shows effects can be significant at lower doses as well.
“These studies provide compelling evidence for the cognitive benefits of Memophenol at different dosages,” states David Gaudout, chief innovations officer at Activ’Inside.
Productive polyphenols
The two-arm, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and parallel-group study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, included 143 adults between the ages of 60 and 80 who self-reported cognitive difficulties in line with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The trial lasted for 24 weeks and included several questionnaires and tests to evaluate cognitive ability before, during and following supplementation. Measurements were taken using computer-based cognitive tasks, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-A), the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire – a test to calculate the frequency of everyday cognitive errors – and the CASP-19 to measure perceived quality of life.
The results found that two 150 mg doses are correlated with greater BRIEF-A scores, better visuospatial learning and improvements in the speed of information processing.
“The results validate our hypothesis that Memophenol, even at a reduced dosage of 300 mg, can significantly enhance executive functions, speed of information processing, visuospatial episodic memory and learning, and reduce cognitive failures in older adults with MCI,” explains Gaudout.
Brain-boosting boom
According to Innova Market Insights, product launches that offer cognition benefits are experiencing progressive global growth, with supplement launches 2% increase year-over-year when comparing 2021 and 2022 launches. Moreover, supplements made up 88% of launches in 2022 and brain-mood health took the top positioning at 83%.
A separate recent study found that the polyphenol-rich Mediterranean diet has also been shown to lower “brain age” while increasing cognition. At the same time, researchers in the US linked deficiencies in the polyphenol compound flavanol with cognitive decline and memory loss in a three-year trial.
In other news, polyphenols extracted from fruits have been shown to have powerful prebiotic effects and to support gut health. Additionally, a professor from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, recently told Nutrition Insight that the polyphenols in coffee provide significant anti-inflammatory effects.
