So hyaluronic acid has a strong foothold in the mobility and skin and beauty segments.
In this presentation today, Berrica will explore what it is about this ingredient that continues to attract formulators and how brands can successfully stand out from the competition.
Bioerrica will spotlight its patented HA matrix ingredients and the scientific evidence supporting its ability to power innovation across the dietary supplements and functional food space bidity and skin and beauty applications.
But first, Maderon Tanova will give us a short presentation about global consumer awareness of hyaluronic acid and its current uses.
Before we get started, I'd like to remind our listeners that they can submit any questions to our speakers for the Q&A engagement tour.
Any questions that we don't have time to respond to today can be answered via email following the presentation.
The webinar would also be available on demand on nutritionInsight.com.
A link to view the On Demand webinar will be emailed to you after the presentation.
So with that, let's begin today's webinar with a Novis presentation, which will be followed by a biobarricose presentation.
Hello, good morning and afternoon everyone.
In today's session, I will give you an overview of the hyaluronic acid market.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present throughout your body, and it contributes to, for example, the hydration of your skin and the stability of your joints.
Upon aging, the production of hyaluronic acid decreases, but luckily this can be circumvented.
Hyaluronic acid is already quite an established product in, for example, beauty and personal care products, such as anti-wrinkle cream.
But in today's presentation, I will also show you that hyaluronic acid is gaining ground in, for example, food and beverage products, but also supplements.
So in our consumer survey, we already found out that consumers are aware of the benefits of hyaluronic acids.
So, around 40% of the consumers globally mentioned that they look for different assets, including hyaluronic acid, when buying supplements for beauty and skincare.
And we can also see this when we look to the product, the global product launches containing hyaluronic acids.
So, over the past 5 years, there has been an increase of 51% average annual growth in product launches with hyaluronic acids.
So, in what type of product is hyaluronic acid commonly added?
We see that supplements are by far the most popular product format for the inclusion of hyaluronic acid.
So, it represents around 93% of the product launches, followed by sports nutrition and soft drinks, which only represent around 3% of the product launches.
Here on the right, you can see some examples of products containing the ingredients.
So, for example, the youthful or the health logic supplements, which market the hyaluronic acid as, , maintaining the skin moisture and keeping the tissue and joints lubricated, but it can, for example, also be added to a hot chocolate drinking powder.
Or, for example, to this iced coffee on the right.
So, there's still a lot enough opportunity for innovation for hyaluronic acid across different product categories.
So hyaluronic acid has several health benefits and it can thus also be positioned in different ways.
So here we can see that when we focus on supplements, that skin health is the most common positioning, followed by joint health.
And what's interesting to see is that the positioning skin health increased tremendously over the past years.
So last year, 70% of the supplements containing hyaluronic acid had a skin health claim.
And it's also important to keep track of these less common positionings such as immune health and oral health, which also grew steadily over the past years.
So, on the right you can see a product example where the hyaluronic acid is marketed for skin health, but also for immune health.
So these are the the duo supplements.
And then on the right, we have the brain effects select supplements, where the hyaluronic acid is added to help hydrate the skin and give its firmness.
So let's now focus on the mobility market.
So these are all the products launched with a joint health claim.
So, out of these products, 1 out of 10 product launches contain hyaluronic acid.
So it's already quite an established ingredient.
And we see that there's, yeah, the, the innovation activity also kind of stabilized, over the past years.
On the right, we have two examples of sports supplements containing hyaluronic acids.
So, for example, these, these glaxone supplements, where the hyaluronic acid is combined with a felocetol and electrolytes for enhanced recovery and joint health.
And then on the right, we have the, the chemical warfare supplements, where the hyaluronic acid aids in keeping the tissue and joints lubricated, and there it's also really stressed that it's backed up by research.
And let's now also have a look at the the beauty markets, so these are all products launched with a skin health claim.
And there we can see that there is actually an increase in products launched with hyaluronic acid.
So, back in 20,170, around 4% of the products contained this ingredients, and now it increased up to 8%.
So, it's really gaining ground as an ingredient.
And what's interesting to see is that different types of skin health benefits are highlighted on these products.
So, we have the here the the few beauty supplements.
Where the hyaluronic acid is added to retain the moisture and keep the skin hydrated.
For example, on these Formada supplements, we can see that, yeah, on PC, it's mentioned that the hyaluronic acid fills the space between the cells, helping to maintain the proper structure of the tissue.
So it's, it's, it's nice to see that, yeah, that that they're addressing the the different skin health benefits, but although it's marketed in a slightly different way, we can clearly conclude that hyaluronic acid is gaining ground as nutri cosmetics.
And then I would now like to give the floor to Jo Reguan from Bio Iberria.
Hello, my name is Jamarewan, Healthcare director at BioVerrica, and together with my colleague, Daniel Martinez, head of human health R&D at Bioverica, we're going to present our hyaluronic acid, matrix ingredient, a unique HA-based ingredient for mobility and beauty.
This is the table of contents of our presentation today.
First of all, we're going to introduce our hyaluronic SAT matrix ingredient.
We'll later on talk about the market opportunity and explore the science behind it.
We will then summarize the main takeaways of the presentation and do a short introduction about Bioerria.
And at the end of the presentation, we'll have a Q&A section so that you can ask any question you may have.
So let's get started.
Let's talk about hydonic acid, matrix ingredient.
You are probably wondering what is exactly hyaluronic acidmetrix ingredient, so it is a natural origin patented ingredient that contains 3 natural occurring components.
It has a high concentration of HA from 60 to 75%.
It has a 10% of polysaccharides, and it has also 5% of collagen.
This unique ingredient has been researched and developed by Bioerria.
And who is Biorica, you would know who is Bioverica.
In a nutshell, Bioerrica is a life science company.
We are experts on biologically derived ingredients.
We are strongly scientifically driven, and we have extensive market knowledge related to the ingredients we research.
We manufacture and we market.
And what led by Vria to the development of this HA matrix ingredient.
So let's see which has been this amazing journey.
Viberca was established in 1975 for the production of heparin, a molecule of the glucose aminoglycan family, and an injectable grade pharmaceutical substance widely used for its antithrombotic properties.
Later on, Biorica started the production of other glucose amino glycans such as chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid.
And we started with the production and sale of pharmaceutical and injectable grade hyaluronic acid.
Injectable grade hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate are common treatment, treatments for joint health and osteoarthritis.
As a result, Bioca specialized in joint health as its main therapeutic field.
By Vera's background in the production of pharmaceutical grade HA and our specialization in joint health led to the development of our HA matrix ingredient.
The ingredient composition was patented and the joint and muscle health scientific development started.
Under the brand of Mobile.
Then we got the novel food approval by the European Commission, and this was an important milestone in our development of this ingredient.
And the latest step in the journey has been the skin and beauty scientific development under the name, the brand name of Dermal.
In any case, I'm sure that the HA matrix ingredient journey will not stop here.
So, we have developed two brands, and both of them have been proven their scientific and efficacy in different health areas.
Mobili, our hyaluronic acid matrix ingredient for mobility, and dermal, our hyaluronic acid matrix ingredient for beauty.
But why mobility and beauty?
What is the market opportunity?
Let's see some trends about these markets.
Mobility is going mainstream, and that's because mobility is a rising opportunity.
Here you have some data according to a recent market research carried out last year, and we see that as much as over 36% overall consumers want to improve their mobility in the next year.
And also, as you can see, many branch of agents are interested in improving their mobility.
So mobility is a need for people nowadays.
And as you probably know, we can find a wide range of ingredients for mobility.
But none, not all of these ingredients are perceived in the same way by consumers.
We know that some of them are more desirable than others, and as you know, as you can see in the graph, ironic acid is the ingredient for which more consumers would be willing to pay more.
If we jump into the nutricosmetic market, there is also a great market opportunity.
Consumer interest in beauty supplements is on the rise.
It's becoming very popular.
So according to Mintel in the US, we know that 48% of consumers took supplements for skin health in 2019.
And talking about the nutricosmetic market, ironic acid was number one fastest growing nutraceutical and functional ingredient for skin health, as you know, and as you can see in this graph, according to Inova database, the number of products containing HA grew by 60% from 2015 to 2019.
Together with collagen, they were the ingredients with the highest growth.
So looking at this number, we can say that there is a clear market opportunity for the hyalonic acid matrix ingredient in beauty and in mobility, for any company looking to innovate into these fields.
And now it's time for science.
So I leave Doctor Martinez, with you.
Thank you, genomen.
Now, I'm going to explain the main effects of Mobile that we have described with the scientific development.
First, we have described that mobile stimulates the endogenous synthesis of yuronic acid.
This is a critical point because it is known that the content of yuranic acid in synovial fluid decreases as a result of the aging process.
The yuronic acid has lubricating effects.
So if there is less yaguronic acid, there is less lubrication, which means more friction and ultimately pain.
This is the reason why joint discomfort is commonly associated with the aging process.
Of course, this process is dramatically accelerated when there is a joint pathology, for example, osteoarthritis.
Mobiy has demonstrated to promote the yuronic acid synthesis, and this has been shown to be linked to reliefs of joint discomfort in human studies.
Second, Mobile has also shown to reduce inflammation at joint level.
This is the 2nd mechanism and it is also important because for years, cartilage degradation has been considered to be a result of a mechanical load of the joints.
Afterwards, it was described that cartilage degradation has an inflammatory component that speeds up joint degradation.
Mobile has also demonstrated to inhibit inflammation at joint level, and this has been associated to reduction of synovial effusion and again, pain relief in human studies.
Lastly, mobility has also demonstrated to have a role supporting muscular tissues.
This has been shown to be indirect as a result of less discomfort.
There is more mobility, but also direct because mobility has shown to have a direct effect on muscle cells, promoting its proliferation.
Just some more detail.
This is a study in which the effect on the synthesis of yaguronic acid was demonstrated.
Synovial cells obtained from ostratitic patients were cultured in a standard growth medium, in the same medium with mobili or with pure yaguronic acid from fermentation.
As you can see, the addition of mobili to the medium increased yaguronic acid production.
It is also important to highlight that Mobile stimulated yaguronic acid production more than pure yaguronic acid from fermentation, and this is because of the synergistic effect among their among their components, yaguronic acid, polysaccharides, and collagen.
In this study, we tested the anti-inflammatory effect.
Human fibroblasts were cultured in a standard medium and challenged with interleukin 1 beta to stimulate activation of the inflammatory pathway.
As you can see, the addition of Mobile reduced the inflammation as measured by the secretion of prostagandin E2 to the medium.
These are the results of a human intervention study evaluating the effects of mobility in joint pain in subjects with persistent joint discomfort.
This was a randomized double blind placebo controlled study in which bonteurs ate every day a yogurt supplemented with 80 mg of Mobili or placebo for a period of 3 months.
As you can see at 2 months, there is a significant reduction of joint pain as compared with the placebo, and differences were more pronounced at 3 months.
In another human intervention study, the effects of mobility in muscle function was evaluated with a with an isokinetic dynamometer that measures maximum strength or peak torque, work and power of the affected leg.
This was also a randomized above blind placebo controlled study in which subjects with joint discomfort ate a yogurt supplemented with 80 mg of Mobility or placebo for a period of 3 months.
This figure shows the results of peak torque maximum strength at 3 months as compared to the baseline.
Mobility group experienced an increase in peak torque of 17% while no effect was detected in the placebo group.
This is relevant because it is a direct and objective measure of muscle function and therefore mobility.
OK, now, let's move to the scientific evidence of dermal, the uronic acid matrix ingredient for beauty.
First of all, just a few words about the aging process.
As we grow older, the appearance of the skin changes.
These changes are associated to changes on a skin composition, both the dermal and epidermal layers.
The main effects that we have described with the scientific development of dermal are directed to contract the effects of this process because dermal improves the hydration and elasticity of the skin.
Act as a potent regenerative agent and finally boost the quality of the epidermis and dermis, helping to maintain skin health.
Let's look how.
In this study, the effect of dermal on the synthesis of yuronic acid was demonstrated.
The addition of dermal increased the yuronic acid synthesis by human derm and puroblast as compared to the control group.
The content of yuronic acid is directly linked to a skin hydration.
This is also a study in human derman fibroblasts.
As you can see, the meal induce an increase on the synthesis of LStin, which is linked to a skin elasticity.
Here we analyze the effect on the production of type one collagen, which is the main protein of the dermis extracellular matrix and is responsible for the skin firmness.
Dermal stimulated the production of type one collagen.
Pure uronic acid from fermentation or from extraction have no effect on this collagen synthesis.
In this in vitro study, Vermel stimulated the proliferation of fibroblasts as compared to the negative control.
Dermal has a greater effect as compared to pure uronic acid from fermentation or from extraction.
The proliferation of fibroblast is also important because it's directly linked to the regenerative properties of the skin.
And finally, we have also explored the intestinal absorption of the yuronic acid Matthews ingredient because this is a frequent question.
The absorption was demonstrated using an inverted Wsack model, and the results show that there is more absorption in the proximal segments of the intestine, duodenum, and jejunum, but there is even some degree of absorption at the ileum.
Finally, in terms of safety, the profile of the product is extremely robust.
The product has been tested in more than 100 volunteers without adverse effects associated and has been approved by the EFSA as a novel food ingredient.
So, thank you, Daniel.
So for today, I would like to briefly mention some key takeaways about HA matrix.
HA metrics can work in joint health, and also in beauty.
It is protected thanks to its patent, consisting in the synergistic effect of the three components ironic acid, polysaccharides, and collagen.
And remember, all these three components are naturally occurring.
And it's also remarkable that HA metrics requires a low dose, so 80 mg only a day for Mobley and 60 mg a day for, for beauty.
BRA's HA metrics is widely supported by science.
In total, we performed 14 studies, clinical studies.
It has been a solid regulatory framework.
It is considered a novel food in Europe.
It has a grass status in the US.
And for instance, it has already been registered by Evisa in Brazil.
And we cannot forget that the HA Matrix is considered GMO-free and halal certified, which is important.
It is also important to say that HA Matrix is an ingredient which is perfect for formulating dietary supplements and functional foods.
Why Because it doesn't have any kind of taste or odor, and it has, it is water soluble.
And remember that HA matrix is an ingredient which comes from natural source.
So let me say a few words about, Berria.
BA is a life science company which, with more than 4545 years of expertise in biologically derived APIs and health ingredients.
Among other data, we have to remark that Biorica is the first European producer of heparin.
We are part of a group, a German group called SAA with more than 2600 million of turnover and more than 11,000 employees.
And we are a sustainable and circular economy based company, and it's a company which is clearly based on on science.
So that's the presentation for today.
Hope you like it, and, it's been a pleasure to be with you.
Yes, thanks to all our speakers for their insightful presentations.
This is Joshua Paul again from Nutrition Insights, and I will now host a Q&A session with our experts.
I've received lots of great questions already, so thank you for those who have sent those in to us.
So let's take our first question.
What is the main difference between a hyaluronic acid matrix ingredients and pure hyaluronic acid?
Who would like to start off with that question?
Yes, let me ask the, the main difference between these ingredients is their composition.
By varicu yaguronic acid matrix ingredient has a unique patented composition containing three naturally occurring components yaguronic acid, polysaccharides, and collagen that work synergistically to elicit an enhanced effect.
For example, for mobility, mobility has shown to increase the.
Oral synthesis of yaburonic acid by synoviocytes to a greater extent than fermented yaguronic acid at the same dose or in skin health er meal promotes a significant increase of type one collagen synthesis, an action that has not been observed with yaguronic acid from fermentation origin, for example.
OK, that's very interesting and Jean, do you want to add anything to that or should we move on to the next question?
You can go to the next question.
OK, so we turn our attention to consumer awareness.
What is the consumer awareness of, hyaluronic acid and how can we educate them on newer forms like the HA matrix that you're presenting today?
Yes, hydroic acid is an emerging, is emerging as a popular ingredient in the mobility and sport, nutritional space, but it is rapidly gaining traction compared to skin and beauty industry where it's, it's more established.
There's a research study from FMCG Grus showing that 10% of consumers purchasing joint health products.
Specifically seek for hyalonic acid, which is important.
The same research said that the sciences based on branded ingredients are two key purchasing drivers for mobility solutions.
And when it comes to awareness of newer forms of ingredients, education and understanding in becoming is becoming crucial to influencing purchasing decisions.
OK, thank you.
And we'll move to our, our third question.
This one is about format.
So, in what formats can Mobiy and Dmel be formulated?
Are there certain applications in which they work better than others?
OK, let me answer that.
Thanks to the product's efficacy at low doses and their organic properties, both ingredients can easily be used in formats such as supplements and functional foods.
And it does not significantly change the smell or taste of the products to which it is added.
For example, specific applications include yogurts, drinks, pills, capsules.
In particular, the meal offers an excellent opportunity to tap into the growing beauty from within trend by enabling convenient formulations of nutraceuticals.
OK.
And as a follow-up question, what do you see as the most popular and trending delivery formats for these ingredients?
So you mentioned, for example, capsules.
Yeah, I don't know if you could, introduce some trends in regards of the most popular.
I would say capsules and mainly capsules, also tablets and we are working now in probably yogurts and other components like that.
Yeah, OK, that makes sense.
And onto our next question, can Mobiy and the meal be formulated with other ingredients?
Yes, absolutely, both Mobley and Ermial can be used in formulations with other complementary ingredients.
For example, scientific research shows that Mobilly can be combined with native, and the type 2 collagen, as colaban N2, in order to support joint health and mobility.
And it also can be formulated with other ingredients that have been shown to support joint health, such as, for example, Wazwea or herbal extract.
So, these scientific developments are shaping the, the, the future of nutrition for sport and exercise.
And it empowers manufacturers to create effective and comprehensive solutions for, to target, , health areas in a more holistic way.
For skin and beauty, for example, dermal can be formulated with other -known ingredients like collagen peptides that is also known by its low dose, 60 mg per day, and it can also be formulated with ingredients outside of established skin health solution to tap into emerging health areas such as, for example, probiotics, to target the gut skin axis.
So this, this flexible formulation is the key, is key in providing, more personalized skin and beauty products to target a range of consumer needs.
OK, that's very interesting, Jim.
Thank you very much for that.
And unfortunately that's all we have time for today.
I would like to thank today's speakers for sharing their insights and a big thank you also to all our viewers around the world and goodbye for now.
Goodbye.
Thank you.
