Vitafoods Europe 2024: Corbion unveils sustainable omegas from its new health and nutrition business
07 Jun 2024 | Corbion
In Geneva, Switzerland, we sat down with Erica Franco, the global marketing and communications manager at Corbion, to discuss the company’s health and nutrition business. The new business has unveiled several solutions from its fermentation processes. These include algal-based omega-3s, 6 and 9s. She further highlighted that the process supports the company’s commitment to sustainability by cutting fish out of the equation and going straight to the original source of omega fatty acids, algae.
Hello everybody, this is William Bradford Nichols, the editor for Nutrition Insight, and I am here today at Vita Foods Europe in Geneva, Switzerland with Erica Franco, the global marketing and communications manager at Corbian.
Hello Erica, how are you today?
I'm fine, thank you for having me.
We're excited to talk to you, and we understand that Corbian has a new business.
Could you please tell us about that?
That's correct.
So we are here.
Again this year to present the Corbyn Health and Nutrition Business, so it's the newest business unit within Corbyn that was designed to produce nutritional ingredients for enhancement of, of course, human nutrition in a sustainable manner.
Can you tell me about some of the products and health benefits that exist within this new business?
Yes, of course.
So our portfolio is based in our core technology, which is of course industrial fermentation, and within that we've been utilizing some microorganisms including algae to produce crude oils containing high concentrations of omega 3s and omega 9s that are providing a new Opportunity and new access to omega 3s to this industry.
And so how does that kind of go with Corbin's commitment to sustainability?
It's absolutely connected to our commitment to a more sustainable nutrition because, you know, algae is actually the original source of omega 3s that we use to access through fish, but in reality, fish also get their omega 3s from algae.
So by using technology we're able to access, take the middle fish out, and provide a more sustainable source and access to the industry, an industry that needs to grow because we know that there is an imbalance between omega 3s and omega 3s in our diets, that there is a huge demand of omega 3s growing.
The impact of omega 3s within our health.
And our, -being is something that we need to talk more and more about it.
So, yeah, it is growing.
We need a new access, and we're here.
Yeah, that's perfect.
Can you tell me a little bit about sort of the, the functionality and versatility of the products?
Of course, so what we're providing is a crude oil to concentrators and refiners to be able to design their products as they want.
The fact that it's super concentrated and offers, you know, like a huge amount of omega 3s directly for those companies that are looking at how to advance the dietary supplements category with smaller.
Vegan options, and that are looking for, you know, like how to, produce, products that are going to speak to some of the specific benefits.
So of course including the health, the heart health, but, what we're super excited is also about brain and cognitive function.
Wonderful.
Can you give me, can you give us a glimpse into what we can expect in this business within Corby and in the future?
Yes, we are investing a lot.
This is the reason why Corbyn Health and Nutrition was formed this year.
It says a lot about how Corbyn sees the future of nutrition in a sustainable manner.
We're always going, of course, to bank on our Core technology which is fermentation, but there's a world of possibilities, so we are looking forward for next year and bring more and more good news to the industry.
All right, that's wonderful.
Thanks so much for talking to us today and we look forward to hearing much more from Corby and health nutrition in the future.
Oh thank you, thank you so much.
