Novonesis targets oral microbiome health with Biofresh, neutralizing odor in five minutes
02 Apr 2026 | Novonesis
Cassondra Saande, scientific advisor for the Americas at Novonesis, introduces Biofresh, an enzymatic breath freshener that goes beyond masking odors. She explains how Biofresh’s enzyme and a green coffee extract complex neutralize odor molecules, with clinically backed results to significantly reduce odor intensity within five minutes, up to four hours. Saande says Biofresh fits into a growing trend of supporting the oral microbiome and highlights a shift toward more effective oral health solutions as the oral microbiome gains more attention.
This is Yolanda van Hal from Nutrition Insight.
I'm here with Cassandra Sande, who is a scientific advisor for the Americas at Novoices.
Thank you for joining us today.
Yeah, thank you for having me, and I'm really because we're, we're here to talk about BioFirst, which I'm much love to hear more about, and I know there's so much more research coming that is highlighting the oral microbiome's connection to overall health, and I'm wondering how does that make BioFirst stand out as a solution in this space.
Yeah, BrioFresh is an enzymatic breath freshener that has been clinically studied to actually neutralize odor molecules.
So conventional breath fresheners are typically formulated to temporarily mask odors, and what really makes BioFresh stand out is, that it contains an enzyme and plant extract complex that works to actually bind and neutralize those odor molecules.
And this effect happens very quickly and is also long lasting, so it's a really innovative and effective solution.
Awesome, interesting.
And can you walk us through a little bit how does the scientific foundation of biofres work or what kind of unique mechanisms or active ingredients it supports, it uses to support oral health?
Absolutely, yeah.
So just to give a little bit of background to start, when bacteria degrade organic matter in the oral cavity.
That leads to the formation of volatile sulfur compounds, and these are compounds that are key contributors to bad breath.
So BioFresh has the lactase enzyme together with green coffee extract.
And studies have shown that lactase catalyzes the oxidation of compounds within that green coffee extract that then leads to reactive molecules that will bind and neutralize those volatile sulfur compounds in the mouth.
And studies also show that this reaction happens very quickly, and we have a clinical study that's showing this as in, healthy adults.
So in that study we found that, there was a significant reduction in odor intensity.
That happens within 5 minutes of taking BioFresh compared to baseline values and remains significant for a period of 4 hours, so very long lasting, yep, wow, interesting, and, I'm also curious, have, how have you seen market interest evolve in dental health solutions like BioFresh?
Are you seeing any trends in consumer behavior or attitudes, for example, that are focusing more on oral microbiome health?
We're seeing a growing awareness among consumers about the importance of the oral microbiome and oral health is increasingly linked to overall health and -being, so perhaps because of that there's been a shift away from products with harsh chemicals, but effectiveness is still really a key driver.
So consumers are looking for a product that's effective and convenient but also gentle and supporting the oral microbiome.
How does BioFresh fit into a broader oral care routine?
Is it like a complementary product for assisting routines, or is it, does it offer more of a holistic solution?
When it comes to oral care routines, every layer of care is really important, so things like brushing your teeth and flossing, of course, still remain.
The foundation of oral hygiene.
Beyond hygiene, mints and gum, breath sprays and products like that are really popular tools.
BioFresh is really an innovative and more effective alternative to those tools for some of the reasons I mentioned before.
One would be the, the fact that it's actually able to neutralize those odor odor molecules, and the second is its long lasting effects.
Oh, interesting.
Another thing that I always love to close off with is, the future, what you're expecting there.
So what do you think is the future of oral health solutions?
And do you foresee any advancements in microbiome-based products or research that could enhance BioFresh's impact on overall health?
Yeah, the, the oral microbiome is really an emerging area of scientific research and it's getting quite a bit of interest, we're increasingly seeing that the oral microbiota is connected to, not just oral health but systemic health as.
And I think research in this area will continue to expand and that will likely lead to advancements in products that are really targeting microbial balance within the oral cavity and long term oral health.
Awesome, thank you so much.
