At Food ingredients Europe (FiE) 2025 in Paris, France, ADM won the Health Innovation award for its Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305 postbiotic. Prior to the win, we spoke with Marie-Bénédicte Charpentier, ADM’s marketing director for EMEA, who explained how manufacturers can utilize this postbiotic for stress, mood, and sleep support across various everyday applications, including gummies and beverages. She also detailed research outcomes demonstrating the product’s health benefits and presented a chocolate containing CP2305 to support women during menopause.
This is Yolande Fal from Nutrition Insight.
I'm here with Marie Benedict Chapani from ADM.
Thank you for joining us today, and I know we're here at Food Ingredients Europe, where your lactobacillus gasserie CP 2305 postbiotic is a finalist for Health Innovation Awards, and I'm curious, what does this nomination signal about the.
Industry's direction in biotic-based emotional -being.
Yes, I'm very proud that we presented to the jury our CP 2305 yesterday, and you know they did ask some challenging questions, which is always a very good sign of interest.
Siri is really, I would say, a new star in the.
Of functional probiotics.
First of all, it is a probiotics.
What does it mean?
It means that it is stable.
It is the full cells that have been inactivated with heat treatment, and you can incorporate in many, many different matrixes, including the ones where you have extrusion, where you have pasteurization, heat treatment, and that is really crucial as a probiotic.
Second, in terms of the health benefits you can expect, I would say that this strain has a lot of functionalities.
The first one is in sleep, stress, and mood.
Sleep stress and mood has become the number one health benefit consumers in Europe are looking for everywhere looks.
Like we need some solutions and unfortunately only 4% of the new products that are launched onto the market for food, beverages, or DS are targeting sleep or stress.
That's very low.
That's why with this probiotic we expect that the dietary supplement and the food companies will be or beverage companies will be able to move forward in this direction.
Here I have some examples of what you can do.
For example, I have Nice little gummies that are incorporating Egeri CP 2305 that you can take for sleep.
You would have to take that before you go to sleep.
It's not a magic pill.
It is a probiotic that will modulate your gut.
Then you have to take that for several months or weeks, and we have demonstrated a positive impact on sleep in terms of duration, in terms of quality, in terms of number of times you will wake up during the night, and moreover, in terms of the time you will need to get to sleep.
That means that not only we have clinical trials with scientific results like cortisol measurement or like electroencephalogram, but you can also feel as the one taking the product, how much time it takes you to get to sleep.
How long you've slept.
When you look at your clock, you know what time you, you went to sleep, what time you wake up, how many times you wake up during the night.
That you can really notice yourself.
That's why this is really something that will improve your quality of life, OK.
Second, this is also a product that is able to help women, and we know that women's health is a crucial topic.
In this small chocolate, you have the appropriate dose, 20 mg of LB 2205, to get benefits in two very important periods of the life of women.
In one hand, that will help women in their premenstrual cycle.
With this Elge we have demonstrated benefits for mental improvements like depression, bad mood.
It improves that.
But also physical ones like the skin appearance is going to improve, like the vaginal discharge is going to decrease.
Then you will really feel, women that you.
Are better inside and outside.
Another period that is really crucial is menopause, and you can also use CP 235 for perimenopausal symptoms, mental and physical, both together, you know that's really a wide solution.
And as a woman in this period, you feel a bit depressed and having that as a chocolate is nice.
That means that you can combine a nice taste, a little bit of indulgence, but the functionalities.
Awesome.
And I know that the same postbiotic was also nominated as a finalist at Vita Foods Innovation Awards this year, and I'm curious what do these types of nominations here and at previous shows mean for ADM's strategic priorities in future research, specifically when we look at this whole gut-brain access.
Yeah, for the Galbra axis is for something extremely important.
We have submitted, El Gu Siri for an award in Beauty Foods.
We were finalists.
We didn't win, but we also submitted in Gulf Food manufacturing one month ago, and we won the award for the healthy ingredients in Gulf food manufacturing, and we are finalists here.
Cross fingers that we will win.
We'll see tonight.
No, moreover, I think that.
As we really see that it is extremely important to improve the quality of life, and this is one of the very important goals of ADM.
Being able to propose some solutions that can really play with this good brand axis is crucial for us, and in the future we will continue to provide solutions.
And what is important to us is that you can have this solution to your daily products.
That's why.
It is really crucial that it is a probiotics you can have in your milk, in your yogurt, in your chocolate.
This is why it's not only the science, it's the science combined with the convenience and the taste and the pleasure.
That's really the aim of what we want to do in this field.
It's really like everything all together, all these different aspects.
How are you seeing at ADM Are you seeing postbiotics evolve within the mental wellbeing category, of course, with all these things that you were just mentioning about their versatility, but also what makes postbiotics appealing if compared to more traditional botanicals or new tropics?
First of all, I would say that the probiotics that we commercialize and we propose to our customers are.
The issued from the probiotic full cells, and we know that there's a lot of science about the benefits of having a full cell.
That's why we go in this direction of keeping the full cell inactivated.
This is really what we want to provide.
Not only for humans, because we also go in this territory in probiotics for pets.
We have a full range of pet products with the full cell postbiotics.
This is really crucial for us because we want to have all of the metabolized all the different elements from the strains to be valid to provide the functionality.
We have today 3 strains of probiotics for humans.
We want to go further for sure.
We are exploring other territories, of course, in the mental health, but also oral health, also women's health, also immunity, and we really want to provide solutions that can be implemented in all of the daily.
Products to improve the quality of life.
And how do AM's highly functional soy proteins, another thing that you're showcasing here, how do they support the growing demand for protein diversity and personalized formulations for different life stages and lifestyles?
I have here the magic product, I would say.
At ADM we have a wide variety of protein sources because we know that in terms of health, it is really good for your body to diversify the sources of proteins, the animal origin combined with the vegetable origin, and we are very lucky at ADM to be a company that is sourcing a lot of different seeds and therefore.
We have a lot of different sources for our protein, soy protein, wheat protein, many different types, and we can combine with other ingredients.
Here you have an example.
This is a protein shake that is of course containing soy and wheat protein combined so that you have the good nutritional and mouth field balance.
But there you also have a nice.
Vanilla and yuzu taste from ADM natural flavors.
You also have fibersol for the fiber intake.
You also have BPL1 because it is a protein shake.
It is for people that are active and for metabolic health.
Then here you combine functionalities.
You combine the good source of vegetable protein with the nice taste of EDM.
That's why you have everything into this small cup.
Oh awesome.
And finally, I would like to know what are some of the main formulation challenges when combining proteins with biotics, so both topics we talked about, and how is ADM addressing those?
The good thing with the probiotics is that the quantity you have to implement is really minimal.
OK Solubility is not an issue.
You don't have phases that are created.
It's very, very easy to implement, and we are really experts in combining the different sources of protein.
We have R&D labs and development labs that are really dedicated to make those combinations, but implementing crossbi is really not an issue.
We have a full collection of different matrixes where we have explored.
How the probiotics will combine with protein, with wheat, with sugar, with different sources of nutrition, and it's really amazing how they can adapt and how easy they are to formulate.
But that's our aim to support our customers in helping with sharing those trials that we've made with these different matrixes and the combination of proteins and probiotics.
Awesome, thank you so much.
