CPHI 2024: Beneo spotlights sustainable plant-based excipient GalenIQ for nutraceuticals

At last week’s CPHI 2024, we spoke to Michael Black, Beneo’s head of sales for pharma, about the company’s excipient GalenIQ, which he touts as a water-soluble filler and binder that can improve the taste of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Black further discussed how the product responds to the emerging plant-based recipient trend, as well as how plant extracts for nutraceuticals are driving innovation at Beneo.

I'm here at CPHI in Milan, Italy with Michael Black, who is the head of sales in pharma at Veneo.

Thank you for joining us today.

I wanted to ask you, what are you featuring, what innovations are you featuring at CHI this year?

OK, we're here talking about our, excipient gallon IQ which we say is, Water soluble filler binder, which makes medicines and nutraceuticals taste better.

Awesome.

And what market or industry trends does that product respond to?

We see that there's quite a strong trend in the area of plant-based recipients.

So gallon IQ, our product, Isomalt is actually made from sugar beet.

From sugar from sugar beets, so sugar beet is a renewable plant source and therefore we see that our product fits to this trend.

Awesome.

And can you also explain a little bit about what is driving innovation in nutraceuticals at Veo at the moment?

In nutraceuticals there's quite a lot of interest in plant extracts, and plant extracts have certain active ingredient properties.

And there's a lot of interest, you find quite a lot of these are put into capsule products, but there's also an interest that they should be in tablets or capsules.

And so gallon IQ has very good compression characteristics, which means that also these difficult plant extracts can also be put into tablet formulations using the gallon IQ easily, and also that the plant extracts generally have, Poor tastes, by mixing them with the gallon IQ, you get a better taste profile, so it makes it actually taste better.

Can you, do you have some examples that you can discuss or show us?

Yeah, we have here some examples which are just placebo products, but these are chewable tablets with gallon IQ 721, and here you can see they have a nice green color which is due to the.

Apple flavored taste that we have.

So we have generally formulation examples which are available to give to customers using different plant extracts to make tablets.

OK.

And if we look at the nutraceuticals industry, what kind of opportunities?

Or challenges do you see for that industry?

I see that I think there will be continuing interest to develop more and more plant extracts because Ayurveda and natural products, all these things are playing an important role.

And again, the technology remains the same.

Usually these extracts are quite difficult to compress into tablets because they are soft, they don't have the right compression characteristics.

So mixing them together with Galin IQ will bring advantages to those manufacturers.

So I see that definitely as a trend, and also we see there are trends regarding, you know, using less excipients.

In order to get clean labels and this kind of thing, so I see by using Galon IQ you'll also have advantages in being able to reduce the total number of recipients in a formulation.

And a final question, what will be Veno's focus areas over the coming years?

We have some new exciting research and development information where we actually see that certain grades of gallon IQ can be used as water soluble binders for wet granulation processes.

So we have some exciting new information using Continuous manufacturing line and using gallon IQ as a binder, and we'll be presenting that information in the coming months with perhaps a publication or a, a poster at a scientific congress, and I see there are a lot of advantages in the future to have a plant-based excipient for binding solutions which doesn't contain, Peroxides, for instance, and therefore can be used more versatile for a lot of active ingredients.
