Calcium carbonates in bone health and healthy aging

At HiE 2018, Omya presented its Calcipur range of natural calcium carbonates. This all-round ingredient optimizes production processes and formulations, but is also a supreme fortification agent, according to the company. Speaking to NutritionInsight at the show, Stefan Lander, Vice President Consumer Goods at Omya, says: “We are very pleased to present our prototypes with calcium carbonate, which is a very pure, functional and nutritional ingredient.” Thanks to a high bioavailability, this concentrated mineral source supports bone health as well as the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Besides its nutritional qualities, the ingredient positively influences texture and processing, scoring well in applications such as powdered foods, bakery products, cereals, extruded snacks and vegan drinks.

I'm with Stefan Lander who's from Omnia.
Now Omnia are presenting the calcium carbonate ingredients and concepts.
Maybe Stefan, you could begin by explaining to us some of the concepts that you have on the stand.
Yes, thank you very much for that.
Have is OMA is working actually a lot on concepts bringing together our calcium carbonate and calcium carbonate innovations together with our distribution portfolio and some of the concepts we are showing here so for example, tablets, food supplementation, this one, for example, it's called Oabbone.
So it's a product we normally offer for bone health.
So combining calcium carbonate, which is a major supplier of calcium, it contains 40% of elemental calcium.
In combination with our vitamins we have in our distribution portfolio like vitamin D3, helping for the absorption of calcium as as K2, helping to deposit calcium in the right place in our body.
So that's basically a concept we developed in our lab, in our food supplementation Nutra Pharma lab back in Switzerland.
So to address this concept of, of bone health, joint and bone health, I think we are a major supplier of calcium into the market, helping those, manufacturers to have a high level of calcium supplementation.

Second one in this category, shows here a product.
It's called Omia Sprint B12 ODT.
So it's a product where we offer, a supplementation of vitamin B12.
As an ODT, so an oral dispersable tablet, these are tablets which should disintegrate as quickly as possible without the addition of water.
So, the challenge here is to have tablets which are quite hard, as hard as possible, so they can go into this kind of packaging in combination with the fastest integration.
These two worlds normally do not go together.
What we do have is we have a specific innovation.
It's called Omia Farm which helps us for a quick disintegration but also to formulate strong hard tablets so they can be filled in a packaging like this and there is no need for a blister packaging where normally ODT tablets are quite sensitive.
And the third product what we have here is the Omia Fit.
So we combine calcium supplementation with vitamins and energy.
So calcium is clear.
It's our calcium carbonate, adding a lot of calcium source, and then the energy part is something where we have coffee in, taurine, and guarana to be fit in the afternoon hours of the show.
So this comes in a raspberry flavoring.
It's easy to handle.
You just put it in water and then you have this, basically energy drink formulated by Omia.
So you see this is quite a diverse type of applications when it comes to food supplementation, to health ingredients, and yes, we are happy to have these two parts, one being our own manufactured calcium carbonates and the other part being the ingredients, the natural ingredients we supply into the food industry here and offering here on the healthy ingredients.
