Bioiberica: Spotlight on collagen innovations, delivery formats, and targeted health benefits

23 Jun 2025 | Bioiberica

Mónica Gomez Navarro, marketing manager at Bioiberica, shares key insights from the company’s recent Collagen Symposium 2.0. She discusses findings from its Collagen Industry Survey, including technological advances and educating the market on collagen types. Collagen science is expanding, linking specific collagen types and peptides to new health benefits for a target demographic rather than a general population, she notes. In addition, at the symposium industry experts urged manufacturers to use an efficacious collagen dose as they explore novel delivery formats, such as collagen-fortified milk.

This is Yolanda van Health from Nutrition Insight.

I'm here at Bio Bioericas's plantation in Spain, and, talking with Monica Gomez, Gomez, the marketing manager of Bioerica, and I know you've just had this collagen symposium 2.0 at V Foods this year, and I'd love to hear more about what was discussed or like new innovations in collagen.

And one thing that you mentioned that you talked about a lot of collagen forms or collagen types, I should say.

Why is it important to talk about collagen types?

Yeah, we think it's very important to talk about collagen types because a long time ago we identified that there is a lot of confusion in the market for collagen, not only consumers but also innovators and even medical professionals.

I find it challenging to understand the different types of collagen, how they work in the body, and what are the different health indications.

That's why Bio America decided to take actions into, dispelling this market confusion, and, and that's why we decided to organize this collagen symposium and have industry experts to discuss about the different types, to educate the market.

To the market and to clarify all this confusion.

So, for us it's, it's very important to, to really, , put some clarity in the category and, and avoid, this confusion.

Yeah, yeah, and I know you also talked about technological adventures at the symposium.

Can you share some key, key advances that were highlighted there?

Yeah, in terms of advances, from a scientific point of view, one of the conclusions that come from the experts, from the panelists, was that more and more the science is becoming, becoming more specialized.

There are new health benefits for collagen and these benefits are.

More and more for a specific target population, for instance, sports people or even women only benefits, and this is what is really changing the collagen landscape.

This specific specificity, I don't know how to say it, but really, collagen peptides was something for skin, for joint.

Different indications, but now, there are specific collagen types for specific health indications.

This is kind of the tendency in the market in terms of technological advances, yeah, becoming really targeted.

Exactly.

Also for the, for the population, there are more and more studies for specific target population rather than general population.

So this is more or less how the market is evolving and this is what the panelists conclude.

In the college and symposium, OK, and I understand you also there were also some novel delivery formats that were highlighted.

I'm really curious if you can just give some examples and how they enhance efficacy or consumer experience in terms of new formats.

The industry experts discussed about new delivery formats and while we all know that still.

Pills and powders and dietary supplements are the biggest market.

More and more food applications are really growing and because they are more appealing for the consumer, right?

We, we all prefer to to have a healthy diet in order to promote our health rather than taking pills to treat a health.

Conditions.

So, and, and in, in this sense, they, they discuss about very innovative presentations that have been launched into the market such as, , a collagen fortified milk, that, is a milk that has been fortified with native type 2 collagen, that is a collagen that acts as only 14 mg per day.

So thanks to its very low dose, it's very easy to incorporate in.

In different product applications and it, it, it opens a lot of possibilities, no, but, but they also discuss about bars, gummies.

Especially also beverages, it's a very big market, and, but again.

The dose was also discussed as, as a point, , important, to follow because, , they kind of urged, manufacturers to really include the efficacious dose in all these new product presentations that sometimes, it's not the case.

So yeah, so that consumers can really trust that whatever product they have, the dose is there and the efficacy is there, OK.

And can you share some examples for Bioria yourself, how you're innovating within the collagen space to stay ahead of what's happening in the industry?

Yes, Biorica is innovated in the collagen space in two ways.

From a scientific point of view, we are doing research in a specific target population.

For instance, we recently carried out a study in healthy subjects, people doing sports and having joint discomfort associated with exercise.

This is an important study for our ingredient for cola12, which is a native type 2 collagen that is only 40 mg a day.

You have the efficacy supporting joint health, and we also, recently published a clinical study in women only, which is, you know, women's health is, is kind of a big trend now, and, but few companies have studies specific for women.

And we carried out a study in women showing that the product is efficacious, improving joint function in women around menopause, that we really have these problems associated to joint discomfort.

From the science, we are also innovating.

In product formats because, yes, we believe that science is very important, but also a way to innovate and, and it's to help our customers to develop new formulations.

What, what we are doing in this sense, we are developing new formulations and studying.

How our ingredients, behaves in different food formats that, you know, they have specific, manufacturing processes.

They submit the product to, high temperatures, to low pH, long time, so the product can be degraded and it's challenging to include the products in the formulation, but not only that, but also to demonstrate that the product really Resist this manufacturing process and it's there when it's finished and during the shelf life.

So we have developed all this technical knowledge that we share with our customers in the food industry in order to help them to develop products at the speed that the market is really asking them, because everything is so fast and we have been working with milks, with gummies, with.

With ready Turin shakes with also with powders, we also developed a hydration drink with colaants for mobility, and yeah, we have been working a lot in this new area for us, but very interesting and exciting, interesting, and I'm also really curious if you can talk a bit about collaborations within the industry and with other industry stakeholders and how that influences your approach in innovation and collagen.

Yes, we, we believe that collaborating with, partners is the way to, to evolve and to, and to innovate because we know a lot about our molecule and about our market, but we don't know everything, so it's good to share.

Knowledge with others and in this sense, for us, it is very important the collaboration we have with the Collon Stewardship Alliance is the association, the collagen Manufacturers Association.

It, it gives us a broad perspective of the collagen category and, apart from that, we are also, , very much in contact with, experts, market, experts, that, provide us with the right market insights and, and, and this is really helping us to, to, to innovate and to do the things that, the, the market, need.

OK, thank you so much.
