Wild Green Oat Extract Could Help Reduce Cigarette Cravings

08/04/09 Frutarom USA has released new results from a study showing Neuravena, an extract derived from a proprietary strain of wild green oat, was found to significantly reduce the average number of cigarettes smoked per day.

“It is generally known that trying to reduce smoking can cause severe stress, both physically and mentally,” explains Jocelyn Mathern, M.S., R.D., Technical Health Specialist for Frutarom USA. “Traditionally, oats have been used as a remedy for psychological complaints such as anxiety and stress. Previous reports also indicate that extracts from wild green oat herb could have a beneficial effect on smoking cessation.” The Pilot study of the standardized oats herb extract for smoking reduction, (Fujii, F et al (2008), from Ortho Medico Inc. Open Lab, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, is a first attempt to confirm a positive influence of Neuravena on stress levels and mental performance of volunteers trying to reduce their daily tobacco consumption or quit smoking altogether.
The study was conducted with a group of male Japanese volunteers who smoked an average of nearly one pack (twenty cigarettes) per day. They received three 300 mg capsules of Neuravena wild green oat herb extract daily for 28 consecutive days in an open-application trial. Subjects were asked to report the number of cigarettes smoked plus their self-assessed mental condition each day. (Participants’ exhaled breaths were analyzed for carbon monoxide (CO) concentration to verify a reduction in smoking.) Self-reported daily tobacco consumption significantly decreased by approximately ten cigarettes per day — from 19 down to 9 cigarettes daily. Exhaled CO levels also decreased. Neuravena extract was found to improve both general and verbal memories as well. In summary, Neuravena was found to significantly reduce the average number of cigarettes smoked per day by 55.4 % at the end of the trial, compared to initial numbers. It also was able to stabilize stress levels in the pressured situation of reduced tobacco consumption.
“This research has shown that Neuravena has a positive effect on smoking cessation events as well as on memory function, while stabilizing stress levels in a pressured situation of reduced tobacco consumption,” noted Mathern.
Previous research shows that Neuravena wild green oat extract has a significant, positive effect on brain activity, enhancing mental fitness and general stress resistance. Neuravena helps improve overall mental fitness over the course of the day and supports cognitive performance.
