In brief: Accolades, appointments and retirements
One of Denmark’s leading academic institutions has presented an honorary doctorate degree to Claus Hviid Christensen, CEO of Nexus, an independent company that provides research & development services to Palsgaard’s emulsifiers and stabilizers business, for his contribution to science. The prestigious award was announced by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) on October 26 with Henrik Bindslev, Dean of its Technical Faculty, describing Claus as “a brilliant researcher with a sky-high h-index.” The h-index measures the impact of a scientist based on the number of citations their papers have received in other publications. Mr. Bindslev also singled out Claus Hviid Christensen’s ability to take fundamental research and apply it successfully in a commercial environment. “[He] is working on the basic-level science, creating new insights, and on the practical level, making new inventions – putting them into use and following through with them,” he said.
Natural Remedies has appointed functional ingredient supplier AIDP as the exclusive distributor of its range of ayurvedic extracts in the US. Natural Remedies is a research-driven herbal healthcare company based in India, specializing in botanical extracts, including the company’s portfolio of branded ingredients, as well as its signature line of Ayurvedic products. Natural Remedies branded ingredients are used in a wide range of applications and include Turmacin (joint health), Gutgard (gut health), APBio (immune health), Ocibest (stress management) and Bacopa-E (cognitive health), all of which are backed by published clinical trials. AIDP will be showcasing Natural Remedies products, as well as its broad portfolio of ingredients for health, at Supply Side West, in Las Vegas next week.
In brief: Miscellaneous
Diabetes UK has committed US$5.5 million (£4.2 million) in 13 new research projects across the UK, researching ways to stop Type 1 immune attacks, making the complications of diabetes less harmful and finding methods to treat Type 2 diabetes. A large part, £2.3 million, will go towards five new fellowships. These are special awards to support talented scientists and healthcare professionals to become independent diabetes research leaders. “Our research funding has been behind some of the greatest transformations in diabetes care over the past 80 years. But pioneering diabetes research cannot take place without dedicated expert scientists leading the way,” says Elizabeth Robertson, Director of Research at Diabetes UK.
Cypress Systems, Inc. will introduce its BodyReady platform for its premium SelenoExcell high-selenium yeast ingredient at SupplySide West 2018, Las Vegas, and will be creating a white paper to support the new platform. “BodyReady is our promise to actively stand watch, and to reshape messaging and product claims as new science emerges. It’s our ongoing commitment to understanding how the body works, what it needs, and how our ingredients fit with the current science,” says CEO Paul Willis. As a result, BodyReady aims to guide formulators to make better-informed ingredient selections with confidence. Willis comments that the industry needs the BodyReady platform now more than ever. “Our industry has gotten a bit lax in making structure/function claims and applying science. There’s a lot of emphasis on borrowed science. We may have a low barrier of entry into our industry, but we have very informed consumers. We need to rebuild the trust and integrity of our industry. BodyReady is a way to build that credibility.”
