Soluble Fiber Ingredient Shown to Improve Insulin Resistance in Overweight Men
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of NUTRIOSE supplementation on insulin resistance and determinants of metabolic syndrome in overweight men.
Oct 28 2010 --- Roquette’s dietary fiber ingredient NUTRIOSE has been shown to improve insulin resistance and determinants of metabolic syndrome in overweight men.
The influence of dietary fiber on determinants of metabolic syndrome remains controversial. Nevertheless, more and more research is done to check this hypothesis, in view of finding ideal solutions to bring to the issue of worldwide epidemic obesity. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, NUTRIOSE has been shown to improve insulin resistance and determinants of metabolic syndrome in overweight men. These results are described in a new peer-reviewed paper that will soon be published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of NUTRIOSE supplementation on insulin resistance and determinants of metabolic syndrome in overweight men. The diets of 120 overweight Chinese men were supplemented with 250 ml of fruit juice that contained either NUTRIOSE or a maltodextrin placebo at a dosage of 17g twice daily for 12 weeks. Daily caloric intake, body composition, blood chemistry, and blood pressure were evaluated every 4 weeks during the trial. Subjects of the NUTRIOSE group consumed fewer calories per day and had greater reductions in body weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist circumference as compared to those of the control group. All markers of glucose metabolism and all lipid measures improved in the NUTRIOSE group (all p<0.01) although no changes were observed in systolic blood pressure between groups. Moreover, no adverse events were reported in either group.
Supplementation with NUTRIOSE for 12 weeks was well tolerated, lowering insulin resistance, and improving determinants of metabolic syndrome in overweight men. Therefore, NUTRIOSE is a useful tool for diet fiber enrichment, but also for weight management and chronic metabolic disorders associated with overweight.
