Selenium-Enriched Milk Targets UK Independent Stores

28 Apr 2015 --- A new milk brand has been launched into the UK market, offering more nourishment as part of a healthy diet.

Producer NEMi, which stands for Naturally Enriched Milk innovations, has produced a milk brand which is naturally enriched with the antioxidant Selenium. The producer said in order to do this it added organic yeast Selenium to the cows’ diets.

“We use the enhanced mineral Sel-Plex from Alltech – a natural, traceable, safe source of organic selenium that optimises selenium status and usahe to enhance animal health and performance,” a spokesperson said. 

“We do this because our soils are deficient in Selenium and in turn so are our cows. Without this the cow’s immune system cannot function at its optimum.”

The spokesperson said the general health of the cow is much better, proven by the fact that NEMi cows suffer 15% less Mastitis that average. 

“The organic yeast Selenium is converted by the cow into a form that is bioavailable to us when we drink NEMi milk and our bodies benefit from this.”

The company says the human benefits from this are that it facilitates a healthy immune function and it is also believed to slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s Dementia. Selenium is also essential for a healthy thyroid gland and it maintains male fertility. It also helps prevent various cancers and heart disease. 

“As a nation 90% of us are deficient in Selenium, although it is vital for your immune system to function properly. Without it our body’s ability to fight illness and infection is greatly reduced.” 

The milk is also processed for just 17 to 22 seconds, compared with 40 seconds on average for standard supermarket milk. This means NEMi milk tastes “creamier, fresher and tastier”, according to the company. 

The company is also working to create a cheese (along with Butler’s Cheeses of Lancashire), which contains all the benefits of NEMi, as well as a milkshake made from NEMi milk. 

The company also notes that they want this to be the only brand of milk you can never buy in supermarkets. “We want to maintain an ethical supply chain and ensure our farmers are paid a fair price plus a premium for their milk,” said brand manager, Ashleigh Henderson.
