Probiotics for pediatric well-being: Experts spotlight Lallemand Health Solution’s probiotic for ELN and gut health
08 Nov 2023 --- The ability of Lallemand Health Solutions’ probiotic bacterial strain B. lactis Lafti B94 to bolster gut health among infants and children is being touted in a recently published comprehensive review. The review highlights not only the strain’s safety profile but also the substantial body of scientific evidence supporting its use in early life nutrition (ELN).
The scientists looked at the evidence of the strains’ effects on the human gut — a complex ecosystem teeming with trillions of microorganisms — collectively known as the gut microbiome.
“Bifidobacteria are naturally prevalent in microbiota in early life,” says Sylvie Binda, the VP of R&D at Lallemand Health Solutions and a co-author of the study. “A healthy balance in the gut microbiota is important in maintaining and supporting newborns’ and infants’ gut health.”
“This review summarizes the preclinical and clinical evidence available on B. lactis Lafti B94 and describes its role in pediatric populations in various indications.”
The bacteria that make up the gut microbiota have been shown to play a pivotal role in maintaining health, particularly in areas such as digestion, nutrient absorption and immune system function.
Boosting ELN and health
In infants and young children, the composition of the gut microbiota is of paramount importance for the establishment of a robust immune system and overall health. Probiotics, often referred to as “friendly” or “beneficial” bacteria, are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts.
These microorganisms can help restore and maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, promoting various aspects of health. Bifidobacterium lactis, specifically the B. lactis Lafti B94 strain, has been extensively researched and has emerged as a potent candidate for enhancing children’s gut health.
The comprehensive review, published in Microorganisms, looks into the myriad benefits of the strain for infants and children and takes a deep dive into its mechanisms of action, presenting findings from nine clinical studies involving pediatric populations.
These studies provide compelling evidence of the strain’s efficacy in supporting infants’ gut health, enhancing gut comfort and improving gut transit during episodes of occasional diarrhea and constipation.
“B. lactis Lafti B94 is a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) notified for use in non-exempt infant formula from birth, reaffirming its safe use in the pediatric population,” explains Binda.
The research also indicates that probiotic strain can serve as an adjuvant in scenarios involving H. pylori — a bacterium that can cause stomach ulcers and gastritis — infection and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, potentially reducing side effects.
The importance of gut health
The company says that, based on the scientific foundation laid out in these reviewed studies, the strain has earned specific health claims recognition. In Canada, it is recognized for supporting intestinal and gastrointestinal health, promoting a favorable gut flora and contributing to a balanced microflora from birth.
Additionally, starting at the age of four, it is deemed beneficial for alleviating abdominal discomfort, including bloating and constipation, as well as assisting children and adolescents dealing with these issues in irritable bowel syndrome.
In the US, these scientific findings allow for structure and function claims, suggesting that the strain aids with occasional bloating and constipation while supporting overall gastrointestinal comfort.
Furthermore, Lallemand Health Solutions is highlighting the importance of gut health for children’s overall well-being. During infancy and early childhood, the gut microbiota undergoes significant development and the composition of these microbial communities may impact a child’s health trajectory.
However, various factors, including diet, antibiotic use and environmental exposures, can disrupt the delicate balance of the gut microbiota, potentially leading to digestive issues and other health concerns. The company says that this is where probiotics like B. lactis Lafti B94 come into play, offering a natural and evidence-based means of promoting gut health in children.
The company reveals that probiotics, with their ability to modulate the gut microbiota, are poised to play an essential role in pediatric healthcare, offering a safe and natural way to enhance gut health, reduce digestive discomfort and support overall well-being in children.
It also notes that as research advances, more insights into the remarkable potential of bacteria in promoting health and wellness in infants and children will likely be revealed.
