Mood boosters: New era of “self-care” supplements spotlights psychobiotics and calm clarity

The mental wellness market emphasizes self-care as consumers increasingly lean toward holistic lifestyle rituals instead of medicinal approaches to boost mood. This transition has given rise to psychobiotics — probiotics and postbiotics to manage stress and sleep via the gut-brain axis, without the jitters of traditional stimulants. 

In botanicals, black cardamom extracts offer caffeine-free focus, while fermentation-derived salidrosides help conserve endangered rhodiola. Overall, consumers are prioritizing “steady” performance over overstimulation.

Nutrition Insight speaks to Kaneka Probiotics, ADM, Akay Bioactives, Gnosis by Lesaffre, and dsm-firmenich about innovations and market trends in the mood supplements arena.

“There has been a broad shift in consumer preference toward supplementation that feels more like self-care than medicine, and this is especially important in the mood space,” says Jordi Riera, chief business officer at Kaneka Probiotics.

“Brands are increasingly delivering ingredients such as psychobiotics in formats beyond the traditional capsule.”

He adds that single-serve stick packs and powdered drink mixes are a “natural fit” for the category, allowing consumers to build gut-brain support into existing daily rituals, such as a morning smoothie or an evening wind-down drink.

There has been a broad shift in consumer preference toward supplementation that feels more like self-care than medicine, and this is especially important in the mood space.In drinks, the functional beverage category is becoming more segmented and purpose-led, according to Martin Mei, senior director of Health Benefits & Solutions, Taste, Texture and Health at dsm-firmenich. “While coffee continues to anchor the energy space, we’re seeing steady growth in formats designed around specific emotional and cognitive needs.”

Meanwhile, ADM research affirms robust global demand for holistic solutions that also support mood, stress, and sleep. “Popular ingredient blends include botanicals, vitamins, and minerals, with awareness of probiotics, postbiotics, and prebiotic fiber also growing,” says Alicia Humpert, global marketing director of Microbiome at ADM.

“Demographically, North Americans report more stress-related sleep issues, and consumers in China show the highest curiosity in biotic-focused mental well-being products. Consumers increasingly seek multi-benefit products that address restfulness, which, in turn, impacts everyday mood management.”

Cardamom for clarity

Akay Bioactives spotlights one of its “most exciting emerging ingredients,” CardaMind, a proprietary black cardamom extract developed for clean mental energy and cognitive clarity.

“The goal was to create smooth, sustained alertness without the jitter or crash often associated with high caffeine usage,” explains Trisha Sugarek MacDonald, Ph.D., market development manager at Akay Bioactives.

“Our early human data from an acute, single-dose study shows encouraging outcomes in attention, reaction time, and perceived mental energy, particularly for individuals experiencing fatigue-related mental slowdown.”

CardaMind can be used on its own or synergistically with caffeine for a “more balanced stimulation.” From a formulation standpoint, it is water-soluble, vegan, non-GMO, mild in taste, and effective at low inclusion levels, which makes it versatile for capsules, gummies, stick packs, and beverages.

Akay Bioactives also highlights its leading mood and sleep ingredient, ThymoDream. The plant-based, melatonin-free solution is a patented black cumin seed extract made from Nigella sativa. It is designed to support restful sleep, emotional balance, and stress resilience.

“What sets it apart is the level of clinical substantiation behind it,” says MacDonald. “Multiple human studies have evaluated ThymoDream using validated tools such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, DASS-21, and Perceived Stress Scale, alongside biochemical markers like cortisol and melatonin.”

“We have also incorporated objective sleep measures, including actigraphy and polysomnography, to assess sleep duration, latency, efficiency, rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement balance, and wake after sleep onset.”

Gut-mood axis

Kaneka Probiotics’ blend, consisting of Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 and Lactobacillus plantarum KABP-051, targets the gut-brain axis to support healthy moods and stress management. “Mechanistic studies suggest that L. plantarum DR7 helps to modulate enzymes involved in the production of serotonin and dopamine, which are crucial neurotransmitters that are closely linked to mood,” adds Riera.

Also in the gut-mood axis category, ADM showcases its Lactobacillus gasseri CP2305 postbiotic, its latest mood support innovation. “With demonstrated benefits across mood, stress, and sleep — three deeply interconnected pillars of wellness — L. gasseri CP2305 postbiotic offers brands a science-backed, differentiated solution for emotional well-being,” says Humpert.

Six clinical trials examining L. gasseri CP2305 indicate benefits relevant to mood, stress, and sleep quality and duration. “Two studies looked at the effects of the postbiotic on women during different life stages. For healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms, L. gasseri CP2305 postbiotic may support positive moods and reduce stress or anxiety,” adds Humpert.

“For women experiencing menopause, L. gasseri CP2305 postbiotic may support positive changes in physiological and emotional parameters. Additional research shows the postbiotic may support improved stress in male athletes, along with recovery from exercise.”

Greener salidrosides

With rhodiola being a popular modulating botanical for stress and anxiety, Gnosis by Lesaffre advances the ingredient’s green profile by producing its key compound, salidroside, through fermentation, eliminating the need to harvest endangered rhodiola.

In a randomized, double-blind trial, 50 active adults supplemented with 60 mg daily of Landkind salidroside for 16 days and performed repeated high-intensity exercises.

“One finding was that those in the Landkind group did not experience the increases in fatigue-inertia or declines in positive social mood that were reported in the placebo group,” details Lorena Carboni, senior product manager and scientific communications expert at Gnosis by Lesaffre.

“Thanks to the substance of our clinical evidence, Landkind Pure Salidroside is gaining attention for supporting mental resilience and reducing fatigue during stress, which has allowed the ingredient to obtain specific structure-function claims on stress-relief effect.”

Gnosis by Lesaffre produces its stress-reducing salidrosides through fermentation, eliminating the need to harvest endangered rhodiola.She adds that Landkind is well-suited to different dosage forms and offers excellent organoleptic properties. “At the same time, mood and sport are linked, and salidroside added to protein powders, for example, can help intense exercisers and athletes maintain an even, bright outlook.”

Essential nutrients

In conventional vitamins and minerals, Mei at dsm-firmenich adds that awareness remains highest for established micronutrients such as iron (68%), B-vitamins (61%), and omega-3s from fish (60%) as a general category.

“However, recognition of the specific long-chain omega-3 fatty acids most closely associated with brain health — DHA (20%) and EPA (9%) — is significantly lower,” he notes. Researchers have recently found that the vast majority of the global population is not consuming the recommended levels of omega-3s, and many are confused by omega-3 guidelines that differ by country.

“Awareness is also limited for botanicals, such as ashwagandha (13%), and for the broader functional category of adaptogens (7%),” adds Mei. “This gap highlights the need for clearer benefit communication and evidence-led positioning.”

Mei also observes a rise in consumer interest in botanicals, such as ashwagandha, ginseng, guarana, lemon balm, chamomile, and green tea. He adds that these are also increasingly supported by studies in stress resilience, alertness, and mood balance.
