PLT Health Solutions’ latest advancement in healthy aging and muscle support
12 Feb 2024 --- PLT Health Solutions introduces Strengthera Muscle Maintenance+Vitality, a brand aimed at optimizing muscle health, strength and endurance. Recent clinical research shows that strengthening muscles can improve overall physical function, as muscle health is pivotal for healthy aging and contributes to a person’s quality of life.
The company spotlights that clinical evidence suggests Strengthera — which contains thistle and mango tree bark extracts — enhances mitochondrial energy, making exercise more efficient and productive. Moreover, it says the product is sustainably produced and safe and offers botanical support for aging muscles and benefits beyond traditional exercise and nutrition strategies.
“Muscle health is important to aging well, as it becomes more challenging to build and maintain muscle mass as we age. Strengthera is an exciting breakthrough as it supports strength, endurance, stability and mobility, enhancing independence, vitality and overall quality of life,” says Seth Flowerman, PLT Health Solutions’ President and CEO. “Strengthera is the latest addition to our industry-leading Mobility Solutions platform as well as an essential healthy aging ingredient.”
Aging gracefully
PLT Health Solutions notes that increasing muscle health can not only help improve quality of life, but also support greater physical independence for aging consumers.
Strengthera subjects experienced a 1.9 times greater improvement in walking capacity, as measured by distance and speed, over placebo recipients. Moreover, improvements were observed in lean muscle mass, energy and vitality, as assessed by the SF-36 questionnaire.
"Muscle health and mobility are important for quality of life at every age, but they are especially critical as we get older,” reveals Jennifer Murphy, director of innovation and clinical development for PLT Health Solutions. “The ability to maintain strength is essential for remaining active and independent, which are key factors in good health.”
Increasing strength across demographics
The efficacy of Strengthera was validated through a comprehensive 12-week double-blind placebo-controlled study involving 92 healthy individuals aged 55-70 years. Subjects received either a daily dose of 650 mg of Strengthera or a placebo alongside a tailored at-home exercise program.
Assessments were conducted at baseline, four, eight and 12 weeks, with key outcome measures including muscle strength, endurance, functional mobility, lean mass, muscle quality, biomarkers and subjective assessments through questionnaires.
Results from the study demonstrated significant improvements in various aspects of muscle health and physical function among participants receiving Strengthera. At four weeks, subjects exhibited a notable 4.2 times improvement in lower body strength, a 4.5 times enhancement in grip strength and a 1.5 times increase in muscle endurance compared to those in the placebo group.
Further analysis revealed that Strengthera significantly improved resistance to fatigue, lean mass, walking capacity and grip strength compared to baseline and placebo. Notably, Strengthera subjects demonstrated a 30% improvement in muscle endurance and a 7.5% enhancement in grip strength over baseline measures by the end of the study.
“Grip strength, in particular, is not only considered an accurate indicator of vitality and overall muscle strength, but also a biomarker of longevity and a strong predictor of future health,” Murphy concludes. “Another important differentiator of this new study is that it included women.”
“Too often muscle ingredients focus studies on men only, but of course, we know that due to physiological differences, benefits should be illustrated in both populations.”
