Performance Labs uses Kyowa Hakko probiotic ingredients in “cutting edge” immunity supplement

19 Jul 2021 --- UK-based Performance Labs is unveiling a probiotic immunity support supplement branded PL-Immune. The product contains key Kyowa Hakko ingredients Immuse and Setria Glutathione and is marketed as a year-round booster to human immunity. 

Abigail Roberts, a sports nutritionist at Performance Lab and Opti-Nutra, says the launch of PL-Immune fills a gap in the immunity supplement market that persists despite an increasingly wide range of available options. 

“There are a lot of immune system booster supplements on the market today. But there are even more challenges. That’s why the best immune support strategy may involve year-round immune support. PL-Immune is a cutting-edge formula with a dynamic probiotic and antioxidant stack that activates multiple types of immune cells,” she remarks. 

PL-Immune also contains a new Lactococcus lactis strain Plasma (LC-Plasma), which is a paraprobiotic for immunity, says the company. 

While many immunity supplements are entering the market, few provide year-round benefits, says Performance Labs.Innova Market Insights pegged “In Tune with Immune” as a top trend for 2021. The market researcher notes that six out of ten global consumers are increasingly looking for F&B products that support their immune health, with one in three saying that concerns about immune health increased in 2020 over 2019, according to the Innova Consumer Survey 2020.

Immuse for immunity 
In the search for ingredients that could achieve both antioxidant and probiotic qualities, Performance Labs was led to Kyowa Hakko, Roberts explains. 

“We chose to include Immuse and Setria Glutathione for an elevated immune performance product.” 

Immuse, a novel dietary supplement ingredient, has been validated by eleven human clinical studies consisting of nine efficacy studies and two safety studies. 

Kyowa Hakko markets the ingredient as one that gets the immune system ready for challenges, supporting year-round health when taken regularly. However, these claims have not been validated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 

A series of safety data, including in vitro, in vivo and in human, have also been collected. 

Setria Glutathione’s antioxidant power 
Setria Glutathione is a tripeptide consisting of three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It is found to varying degrees in all cells, tissues, body fluids and organ systems.

Setria has been clinically researched to support immune health, detoxification and overall healthy-aging properties. Daily consumption can help maintain optimal glutathione levels and overall good health, says Performance Labs. It is also recommended as a dietary supplement for its antioxidative properties.

Kyowa Hakko surging in immune space 
The adoption of Kyowa Hakko’s ingredients in immunity supplements comes as the company is developing a range of new health solutions using probiotics. 

Recently, the company launched Eyemuse, touted as the first heat-treated probiotic strain for healthy eye function. Kyowa Hakko’s parent company, Kirin Holdings, found that the strain may reduce eye fatigue via its ability to support a balanced immune response.
