PanTheryx highlights colostrum functional foods for gut health and immunity
05 Jul 2021 --- PanTheryx is highlighting the health benefits of its Life’s First Naturals – a line of high-quality nutritional supplements that include cow colostrum. The company is touting a range of over 6,000 studies into colostrum’s immune and digestive health benefits for people of all ages.
Colostrum is the first milk produced by mammals after giving birth. PanTheryx’s ColostrumOne bovine colostrum can be used for foods, beverages and dietary supplements as an integrative digestive and immunological health company.
“Colostrum oligosaccharides can act as prebiotics to feed beneficial microbes in the intestine. Traditional prebiotics have simple structures, and while they can improve gut health, they can be associated with side effects like bloating and discomfort,” Chris Lindsay, executive vice president of innovation and R&D, PanTheryx APS La Belle, tells NutritionInsight.
APS BioGroup and La Belle associates, two suppliers of bovine colostrum, formed a partnership with PanTheryx in 2016.
“Cow colostrum oligosaccharides have a more complex structure, and as a result, they can increase the growth of several different strains of probiotics and increase the production of healthy metabolites, which feed the intestinal cells,” he adds.
Benefits of colostrum
Colostrum contains essential nutrients that support the immune system, jumpstart the digestive system and seed a healthy gut microbiome in a newborn’s first few days of life, according to PanTheryx.
“Scientific research suggests an intake of 400 mg to 3 g of bovine colostrum is needed for efficacious levels to support immune and digestive health – although higher levels have been studied and safely consumed,” Lindsay notes.Colostrum has the potential to influence digestive health.
In a 2017 study published in the Nutrients journal, the consumption of colostrum was found to be safe and effective in decreasing intestinal permeability (commonly referred to as “leaky gut”) among healthy men from 20-43 years of age.
In a trial related to immunity published in clinical and applied thrombosis hemostasis, the researchers looked at the ability of bovine colostrum to help reduce influenza infections.
According to a previous study supported by PanTheryx, bovine colostrum may be an effective treatment for common intestinal health issues.
Colostrum intake helped reduce flu episodes and flu-like symptoms in healthy participants and high-risk cardiovascular patients. These studies support the efficacy of bovine colostrum.
“ColostrumOne is available to product manufacturers in North America, South America, Europe and APAC,” Lindsay continues.
Colostrum for all ages
PanTheryx’s ColostrumOne ingredient can be formulated into powder and capsules for adults, powder for children over one and flavored chewable tablets for children three years of age and older, Lindsay states.
“ColostrumOne can now be added to extruded soft-chews, cold-pressed and baked nutrition bars. In each of these applications, we were able to achieve our target immunoglobulin (IgG) levels with ColostrumOne throughout the manufacturing process,” he adds.
During the formulation of this prebiotic ingredient, the team needed to ensure the IgG was standardized to provide steady and efficacious levels of growth factors and immune factors throughout the final product manufacturing process, Lindsay highlights.
“We focus on collecting colostrum from the first 24 hours of production, and our proprietary drying process is optimized to protect the natural bioactives in colostrum to maximize its efficacy,” he continues.
Versatile prebiotic
The link between gut health and skincare is revealed as Sovereign Laboratories’ colostrum-based skincare range is positioned as renewing skin and providing a novel approach to anti-aging.
Bovine colostrum contains more than 100 bioactive components, which have potential in nutritional applications such as sports recovery, anti-aging, and pain management.
