According to CARE, the 2024 Global Report on Food Crises found that 281 million people in 59 countries experienced significant food insecurity in 2023. It also found that conflicts exacerbated these issues. The organization’s humanitarian advocacy advisor talked with us about the role that gender inequality plays in perpetuating food insecurity and stressed that countries with greater gender disparities often face more severe food crises.

For our special report, we sat down with Bioiberica’s CEO and FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ head of sustainability to discuss climate-positive production. FrieslandCampina Ingredients explained ways to remove more CO2 than is produced during manufacturing. The company also stated that setting measurable goals, like those from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), is important. Bioiberica revealed it has held certifications, such as ISO 14001, for over 25 years. The company also participates in the SBTi and has a goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050. Study suggests Beneo’s Palatinose isomaltulose stimulates GLP-1 release in overweight adults
We spoke with the head of nutrition science at Beneo about a new study that demonstrated that its Palatinose isomaltulose can stimulate the release of GLP-1 in overweight adults — potentially aiding in obesity management and type 2 diabetes. Conducted by the University of Alberta, Canada, the research found that when participants consumed Palatinose, it led to an increased secretion of GLP-1 compared to those who consumed other types of sugars. GLP-1 is a hormone involved in regulating blood sugar and appetite control, and the research suggests that Palatinose could help reduce food intake and enhance blood glucose control.

Latest USDA report reveals growing food insecurity among US households
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that 13.5% of US households, around 18 million people, experienced food insecurity in 2023, marking an increase from 12.8% in 2022. Approximately 47.4 million people were affected, up from 33.8 million two years prior. Moreover, about 7.2 million children are living in food-insecure households. The USDA reported that incidents of very low food security were steady at 5.1%, indicating severe levels of food access problems due to financial constraints. We discussed these findings with experts from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the Food Research and Action Center and Vitamin Angels, who highlighted that while food safety net programs exist, they do not fully address underlying issues of poverty and systemic barriers that restrict low-income families’ food choices.The US FDA warned of growing food insecurity in family households.

G20: Brazil and India lead Global South in tackling hunger, poverty and nutrition crisis
At this year’s G20 summit on “building a just world and a sustainable planet,” Brazil and India shined a spotlight on the Global South, which includes regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services resulted in contrasting industry responses. Some stakeholders welcomed Kennedy’s promise of reform to the department and its agencies, while others worried about the “anti-scientific” positions held by the nominee. We caught up with experts from the CSPI, the Natural Products Association, Alkemist Labs and the Council of Responsible Nutrition to examine the possible problems and opportunities inherent in his professed positions.

Famine fears: UN calls for action as Gaza faces malnutrition and starvation risk
UN experts warned of imminent famine risk in northern Gaza, Palestine, and urged intervention to prevent the crisis. “Immediate action, within days, not weeks, is required from all actors who are directly taking part in the conflict or who have an influence on its conduct, to avert and alleviate this catastrophic situation,” underlined the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee. According to the most recent IPC Snapshot Report, the entire Gaza Strip was experiencing acute food insecurity and the analysis warned that the whole Gaza Strip risks famine between November 2024 and April 2025.

Holiday snacking: Experts contest results of new research linking dark chocolate to lower diabetes risk
Researchers suggested that increasing dark chocolate consumption could potentially reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, experts not involved in the research warned that its observational nature prevents establishing a cause-and-effect relationship, and the low diabetes occurrence among dark chocolate consumers could lead to statistical uncertainties. A new long-term US study associated five weekly servings of dark chocolate with a 10% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, with over five servings linked to a 21% lower risk. However, no significant association was found for milk chocolate, which, when consumed in excess, was tied to long-term weight gain. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, US, researchers analyzed data from three observational studies involving 111,654 participants who initially did not have diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer.

FDA proposes mandatory front-of-package labels for better health outcomes
The US FDA intensified efforts to tackle the obesity and diabetes crises, focusing on front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling, sodium reduction and revising “healthy” food claims. The agency also encouraged the food industry to offer healthier options, emphasizing the role of ultra-processed foods in poor nutrition. The FDA believes that FOP nutrition labeling could enhance consumer awareness. Recently, the agency’s commissioner for food and drugs, Robert M. Califf, M.D., along with deputy commissioner for human foods, Jim Jones, presented a proposal for mandatory diabetes and obesity labels on healthy food and beverage products at hearings before House and Senate Committees and Subcommittees.

COP16: Family farmers lead climate resilience and nutrition security efforts
Saudi Arabia hosted the UN Convention to Combat Desertification COP16, focusing on land restoration, tenure and drought resilience. At the event, Stephen Muchiri, CEO of the Eastern African Farmers Federation, discussed how farmers in ten countries are adopting agroecological practices and sustainable technologies to combat climate change and enhance food security. He highlighted that family farmers produce 70% of Africa’s food, contributing to diverse, nutritious diets and combating malnutrition. Muchiri emphasized the importance of family farmers in building resilient food systems, advocating for fair trade policies and promoting traditional crop varieties. He called for stronger policy support, fair pricing and targeted climate finance to ensure their success.

Bayer Consumer Health emphasized the significance of enhancing people’s healthspan over merely extending lifespan amid a globally aging population. In a discussion with Aquil Harjivan, head of front-end innovation, we explored Bayer’s advancements in precision health for longevity and the role of AI in personalizing nutrition to empower consumers. Bayer recently introduced the Age Factor ecosystem, a comprehensive health offering by its Precision Health business unit, combining the One A Day Age Factor Cell Defense supplement, a companion app and Hurdle’s saliva-based biological age test. Harjivan noted that the initiative arose from realizing that consumers often lack precise knowledge about how supplements affect their health.
