Nutrartis launches heart and cholesterol health solution from plant sterols in US
13 Sep 2023 --- Chile-based health solutions provider Nutrartis unveiled Cardiosmile, a supplement developed with natural plant sterols, in the US. The liquid format uses water-dispersible phytosterols for convenient daily heart health and cholesterol management.
“Cardiosmile’s clinical effectiveness lies in its ability to reduce cholesterol absorption markedly. By furnishing a convenient, readily-used form of plant sterols, Cardiosmile supports heart and metabolic health on a systemic level, facilitating the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels,” says Gonzalo Vega, chief business officer and technical director at Nutrartis.
Nutrartis sources its plant sterols from pine trees – making the product vegan – with no preservatives, genetically modified organisms, gluten, sugar, sodium or lactose. According to the company, Cardiosmile has a neutral taste and can be mixed with foods, beverages, yogurts, dressings and smoothies due to its liquid dispersibility.
Taking health benefits to heart
Each sachet contains a 2 g dose of plant sterols, based on the recommended daily amount endorsed by the US National Institutes of Health, with no added calories or fat. Cardiosmile’s scientific validation shows significant results in 28 days.
“Cardiosmile’s innovative formula responds to the evolving needs of health-conscious individuals, offering unparalleled convenience in heart health management,” says Sam Wiley, supplements entrepreneur and the owner of SkySail, the US distributor of Cardiosmile. Cardiosmile has a significant cholesterol absorption capacity.
The product is substantiated by peer-reviewed scientific research and clinical trials. For example, a study conducted at the University of Manitoba, Canada, confirmed its ability to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 12% and triglycerides by 14%.
Another study demonstrated that Cardiosmile reduces waist circumference in metabolic syndrome patients due to regulating fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism.
Beating cholesterol to the punchline
Cardiosmile notably limits cholesterol absorption due to the plant sterols’ structural resemblance to cholesterol. This allows it to outcompete cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract. Unlike traditional tablets or capsules, the liquid form offers many advantages in assimilation.
Each box of Cardiosmile contains a 30-day supply of liquid stick packs with 1.4 g servings of beta-sitosterol and 2 g of total plant sterols.
Meanwhile, a new clinical study on DSM’s Fruitflow prebiotic candidate has been conducted with clinical trial company Atlantia, exploring the supplements’ benefits on cardiovascular health and the gut microbiota through the gut-heart axis. The study found that after four weeks of supplementing the water-soluble tomato concentrate, it decreased fasting blood and urine trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels.
In addition, increasing daily consumption of free sugars by 5% of energy intake was found to increase the risk of total cardiovascular disease by 7%, the risk of ischemic heart disease by 6% and the risk of strokes by 10%, according to a study published in BMC Medicine. Free sugars are sugars added to foods and drinks that naturally occur in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juice.
