Nourished adds ADM’s postbiotic to 3D-printed gummies for personalized metabolic support
12 Aug 2021 --- ADM’s HT-BPL1 postbiotic will contribute metabolic benefits in Nourished’s personalized gummy vitamins. This is possible because HT-BPL1 is able to withstand the harsh processing conditions and high temperature that comes with 3D printing supplement gummies.
“Our launch with Nourished is a direct result of ADM Ventures’ investment in Remedy Health,” June Lin, global vice president of marketing, Health & Wellness, ADM, tells NutritionInsight.
“Nourished is Remedy Health’s personalized gummy vitamin brand, which launched in January 2020. We’re continuing to work with Remedy Health on potential future collaborations to bring nutrition, health and wellness solutions to the marketplace and meet consumers’ well-being goals.”
HT-BPL1 is the heat-treated form of Bifidobacterium lactis, which was developed to target factors relevant to metabolic health. Postbiotics can provide similar benefits as probiotics, but as inanimate microorganisms they retain stability during harsh processing conditions, which increases application versatility.
“This makes HT-BPL1 the ideal microbiome modulator for the complex matrix of these personalized vitamin gummy stacks, allowing Nourished to introduce, for the first time, a postbiotic as an ingredient targeting metabolic health into their offering,” explains Lin.
Harnessing personalization
According to ADM research, 49 percent of consumers believe every individual is unique and requires a customized approach to their diet.
This is especially important when it comes to gut health, as each microbiome is as distinct as a fingerprint and intricately linked to overall health and wellness.
Due to its ability to withstand different formulation parameters and conditions, HT-BPL1 can be added at any stage of the formulation process across application categories, including supplements, baked goods, snacks, beverages, dairy and confectionery.
“This is key for product developers to include microbiome-supporting solutions more easily in different formats as consumers seek out personalized options that fit into their lifestyles,” notes Lin.
She also argues that innovative formats like 3D-printed gummy vitamins are increasingly emerging in the marketplace as consumers look for new solutions that better suit their goals.
Convenience in demand
Convenience is essential as consumers juggle shifts in their everyday routines, such as shifting from working at home to going back to the office.
“Having a wellness solution that can be incorporated into products people already consume daily, such as snacks or beverages, can help consumers reach their individual goals without added steps,” emphasizes Lin.
UK consumers can complete an online questionnaire to receive a personalized Nourished stack containing seven ingredients selected from the Nourished portfolio of 31 vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
Shaking off pandemic pounds
Lin also points out that consumers are proactively looking for ways to maintain their overall health and wellness, with 61 percent of global consumers more conscious of the need to lead a healthy lifestyle due to COVID-19.
In addition to general well-being, immune function support and weight management are top of mind for many consumers.
“Also resulting from COVID-19, 65 percent of global consumers are more conscious of their immune function, and 37 percent say they will try to lose weight.”
Notably, over a year of lockdown restrictions has caused some consumers to put on pandemic pounds from comfort eating. A study in November found that overweight and highly-educated people were especially likely to be affected.
BLP1 has been in two clinical studies that demonstrated positive effects on measures of metabolic health, with clinical results on HT-BLP1 showing similar results. It specifically targets metabolic health via a reduction in waist circumference.
This collaboration with Nourished closely follows BPL1 featuring in a Culturelle supplement – its first for metabolic health and weight management.
In June, an ADM expert argued that microbiome research will lead to critical advancements around the gut-brain axis over the next five years.
