Maximizing bone health: Gadot Biochemical Industry launches calcium-magnesium blend
24 Jan 2022 --- Israel-based Gadot Biochemical Industries (GBI) has introduced a mineral blend for bone health dubbed “Cal2Mag.”
The combination of 100 mg calcium citrate and 50 mg magnesium citrate is formulated in the ratio scientifically shown to provide long-term bone support, says the ingredient supplier.
Preventing calcification with magnesium
An increasing number of studies show that calcium ingestion by itself can increase arterial calcification (stiffness), explains Ohad Cohen, CEO of GBI. These findings underscore the need for corresponding magnesium.
“Without magnesium, calcium supplements can cause a negative effect of vascular calcification, depositing itself on the aortic wall, kidneys, arteries and cartilage rather than in bones where it has the greatest benefit,” he continues.
“Balancing calcium with the right amount of magnesium is good for potentially mitigating those harmful issues.”Calcium ingestion by itself can increase arterial calcification, flags GBI.
Ratio and source are crucial
Formulators need to ensure they are using the right forms of calcium and magnesium mineral sources, stresses Cohen.
“The citrate form is preferred as it is absorbed independently of food consumption. They have a high mineral concentration, neutral flavor, low interference with other minerals and are highly compatible with other nutrients.”

GBI’s Cal2Mag is made with a granulation process with an added binder, enabling tablet manufacturers to:
- Prevent segregation of the power mixture constituents.
- Improve flow properties of the mixture.
- Improve compaction characteristics of the mix.
- Eliminate excessive amounts of dust particles.
Getting the combo right
Calcium remains a key ingredient for maintaining bone health.
Innova Market Insight data reveals that calcium was the top ingredient used in 36% of F&B and supplement launches tracked with a bone and joint health claim (Global, 2020).
In addition, formulators are increasingly finding combinations to pair with it. Vitamin D, vitamin K2 and probiotics, for example, have been shown to play supporting roles along with calcium in bone health.
Vitamin K2, in particular, has been highlighted for its role in activating matrix-Gla protein, which moves calcium from soft tissue into the bones.
GBI’s latest launch continues on previous efforts to supply the population with sufficient minerals. Last November, it announced a plant-based milk fortification program to supply dairy-free milk with the necessary calcium, magnesium and potassium that can bring it closer to cow-based milk.
