Lycored extends astaxanthin capabilities with oleoresin and starch beadlet launches
11 Mar 2021 --- Lycored has expanded its natural astaxanthin offerings with the launch of an oleoresin and a microencapsulated starch beadlet for cellular and immune health.
The oleoresin product is made from Haematococcus pluvialis algae and can be used in soft gels. Meanwhile, the starch beadlet is a cold water dispersible microencapsulated solution suitable for beverages and dry mixes.
“Since we aim to provide technical solutions for a wide range of finished applications, it was important to also develop a CWD option,” Karin Hermoni, head of product and science, tells NutritionInsight.
In the same way, oleoresin is the preferred matrix for the classic soft gel as well as other applications, she explains. Therefore it is important for providing flexibility in the world of dietary supplements.
“Between the classic soft gel and the richness of possibilities that our microencapsulation technologies allow, we can now offer manufacturers a hub for a wide range of finished applications with astaxanthin,” says Hermoni.
Bolstering ingredient stability
Some of the finished application possibilities include tablets, hard-shell capsules, chewable tablets, gummies and nutritional bars.
Lycored’s beadlet microencapsulation techniques, widely utilized in the company’s carotenoid family, enhance the stability of ingredients while minimizing cross-interaction and protecting against oxidation.
“The new products reflect both our commitment to quality and a firm belief that our delivery systems are engineered to address a wide variety of needs, including supporting the growing demand for vegetarian and vegan products,” says Zev Ziegler, vice president of brand and marketing at Lycored.
Through the R&D process, Lycored optimized its analysis methods to ensure the quality, stability and shelf life of the product.
“Not less important is the biological activity, and in this respect our research team explored the mechanism of action and the synergy between astaxanthin and lycopene on the cellular level,” says Hermoni
Tapping into trends
The whole astaxanthin range is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for F&B use and is Non-GMO Project Verified, with further options including gelatin beadlets and vegetarian beadlets.
This caters to the rising consumer population seeking animal-free offerings, as detailed in Innova Market Insights’ second top trend for 2021, “Plant-Forward.”
According to a 2019 consumer survey from the market researcher, three in five consumers are incorporating more plant ingredients into their diets.
Additionally, there has been 55 percent average annual growth in global food, beverage and supplement launches with a plant-based claim (CAGR 2015-2019).
“The use of plant-based, natural means to support overall wellness and immunity is a growing trend we tap into that is extremely relevant at this time. As part of these trends, astaxanthin is gaining specific attention and recognition as a powerful antioxidant link to cellular balance, and health is certainly a driver,” adds Hermoni.
Harnessing carotenoids
Algae-derived astaxanthin is a carotenoid, which is a type of pigment. It can act as a highly potent antioxidant, balancing oxidative and inflammatory status.
According to Lycored, astaxanthin has the power to support cellular health in general, as well as specific health benefits such as skin and immune health.
“We found a synergy on the cellular level in the ability of astaxanthin to boost the activity of immune cells and to balance inflammatory processes,” details Hermoni.
Other astaxanthin players like AstaReal have also highlighted the nutrient’s potential for energy, performance and recovery, as well as for eye and heart health.
As a result, astaxanthin has become a rapidly moving arena. Algalif recently invested US$30 million investment as it strives to triple its production.
Meanwhile, Solabia-Algatech Nutrition now offers microencapsulated powder containing 2.5 percent AstaPure natural astaxanthin for ready-to-mix supplements and beverages.
