Lipogen PS Awarded Patent for Infant Formula
The new formulation is based on Lipogen PS, which received affirmed GRAS status (FDA “no questions”) in 2006. This ready-to-use formulation can be easily applied to any infant formula already containing soy lecithin.
PS (phosphatidylserine) is naturally found in breast milk and is essential for brain development and normal nerve function. However, all infant formulas which are available today on the market do not contain this ingredient that is so important for babies’ development. Lipogen developed this formulation to improve the options for infant formula producers to successfully imitate breast milk.
“We expect the patented formulation will help us expand Lipogen's presence in the infant formula and baby food markets,” says David Rutenberg, CEO at Lipogen. “Lipogen PS is an all-natural supplement based on soy lecithin that does not affect the taste, texture or color of the final product.”

“This is one in a series of developments initiated by Lipogen in 2006 to create an important value-proposition for the U.S. and EU markets,” explains Rutenberg. “We already market it in Asia Pacific, thanks to local regulations that welcome innovative ingredients to the food industry. Our next step is to launch it in the U.S. and Israeli markets. The patent is still pending in Europe and in the U.S.”
PS (phosphatidylserine) is a natural phospholipid found in the membrane of the brain cells. It is considered an important building block of brain-cell membranes and has known to play a role in slowing or even reversing some forms of age-related cognitive deterioration, such as short-term memory loss and diminished capacity to learn new tasks.
