Cellular health is becoming increasingly important as industry and science reveal that health systems are interconnected. The mitochondria are especially central in this understanding, as it addresses healthy aging, healthspan, and lifestage demands. Nutrition Insight speaks with Kaneka Corporation and Kaneka Ubiquinol’s consultant to learn about how nutrition is evolving on an industry and consumer level.
“Over the past decade, we’ve seen nutrition evolve from addressing nutrient deficiencies to supporting specific conditions and now toward supporting healthspan — the health and well-being across life stages,” says Tsuyoshi Takakuwa, head of Marketing and Sales Team (APAC), Supplemental Nutrition Business Division at Kaneka Corporation.

Notably, Takakuwa says that mitochondrial science, which traditionally operated independently, is starting to connect disciplines. Examples of once-considered separate categories include sports nutrition and healthy aging, alongside cardiovascular, cognitive, and reproductive health.
“For the nutraceutical industry, this creates an opportunity to innovate around biological mechanisms rather than individual symptoms,” Takakuwa points out. “We believe this system-based thinking will shape the next generation of ingredient development, clinical research, and product innovation.”

“That is an important distinction. Traditional supplements are often developed around nutrient deficiencies or single health claims,” he clarifies. “Mitoceuticals take a more integrated approach by supporting the function of mitochondria, where cellular energy production happens, helping reduce free radical cellular damage and many signaling pathways intersect, supporting the health of the whole body.”
The exciting part about mitoceuticals is their alignment with the industry’s focus from ingredient innovation to mechanism-led innovation, adds Takakuwa. He points to the natural antioxidant Uubiquinol’s mechanism of action on the mitochondria as an example.

However, Uubiquinol levels decline naturally from above 20 years of age.”

Consumer benefits and awareness
From a consumer perspective, educator and consultant for Kaneka Ubiquinol, Stephanie Berglin, a nutritionist and herbalist, tells us says that people should care about mitochondrial function as they age.

Consumers increasingly realize that maintaining healthy mitochondrial function is an essential part of supporting healthspan, maintaining vitality, and general health, she adds.
“Healthy mitochondria underpin many aspects of everyday well-being, including supporting cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and healthy energy production and energy levels. It also helps reduce free radical damage through antioxidant activity while maintaining muscle function and physical capacity with exercise.”

Berglin explains that the mitochondria support every life stage of human development, as it requires adequate cellular energy production.
Takakuwa explains that increased focus on human clinical research calls for going beyond selling raw materials.“While their importance remains constant, the demands placed on mitochondria change across different life stages. During preconception, male and female reproductive cells have high energy requirements. Healthy mitochondria support female and male reproductive health, including maintaining sperm health and motility.”
“In adulthood, women may experience changes in metabolism, oxidative stress, and energy demands as they age. Endogenous ubiquinol production naturally declines with age, and maintaining healthy mitochondrial function may help support cellular energy production, help reduce cellular damage, and support vitality, skin health, energy levels, and general well-being.”
Furthermore, she adds that aging is linked to gradual changes in mitochondrial efficiency and increased oxidative stress. For healthy aging and healthspan support, it is important to maintain mitochondrial function, as it supports cellular energy production in almost every organ system.

According to Takakuwa, the healthspan focus is bringing exciting opportunities, which the industry has not seen in decades, but this also notches up the scientific bar.
“Supporting healthy aging at the cellular level requires a much deeper understanding of biology than traditional structure-function claims. It is no longer sufficient to demonstrate that an ingredient influences a single biomarker. That is why robust human clinical research has become a strategic differentiator, not simply a regulatory requirement.”
“We are also seeing a shift in the way innovation is evaluated. Historically, ingredients were often compared based on novelty or formulation. Today, credibility is increasingly determined by the depth of the evidence portfolio, reproducibility of findings, quality manufacturing, and long-term investment in scientific research.”
Takakuwa explains that for ingredient manufacturers, this focus on human clinical research calls for going beyond selling raw materials. It means becoming innovation partners that research and educate health care professionals to help shape emerging categories.
“Ultimately, we believe the companies that will lead the healthspan era are those willing to invest consistently in science before the market fully matures. Evidence builds confidence, confidence drives practitioner recommendation, and practitioner confidence is what ultimately enables new categories to become mainstream,” he concludes.
