Hum Nutrition unveils estrogen-free solution for menopause symptom relief
19 Oct 2021 --- Wellness brand Hum Nutrition is launching Fan Club, an estrogen-free solution for managing perimenopause and menopause symptoms. The launch also seeks to normalize the conversation on menopause and “help women feel informed and supported.”
“Almost all women go through menopause, yet it is rarely discussed. The hormonal shifts that occur as we age – and enter perimenopause – can cause many uncomfortable symptoms. Often, these can be as emotionally challenging as it is physical,” says Dr. Jennifer-Martin Biggers, vice president of scientific affairs and education at Hum Nutrition.
Menopausal awareness
According to the company, 1.3 million women enter menopause each year in the US, and by 2025, it is estimated that there will be 1.1 billion menopausal women worldwide.Fan Club is formulated with Siberian rhubarb root, probiotics and grape seed extract to help reduce the severity of 11 common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.
However, menopause is often overlooked and remains a taboo topic – leaving more than 60% of women feeling unprepared for what is to come and 78% reporting interference with daily lives.
The lack of communication about menopause was previously highlighted in an Equelle survey about hormone-free options for menopause symptoms.
“Estrogen, a hormone produced in the ovaries, plays a large role in the onset of menopausal symptoms. As women enter perimenopause, the stage before menopause typically begins in the 40s, and estrogen levels decline erratically. This decline elicits common menopausal symptoms,” continues Dr. Martin-Biggers.
Although every woman’s experience is different, approximately 80% of menopausal women experience hot flashes and night sweats. Also, around 40% experience vaginal dryness and sleep problems and 10-20% experience mood swings, according to the company.
Clinically studied ingredients
Hum Nutrition’s Fan Club is formulated with clinically-studied ingredients such as Siberian rhubarb root, Lactobacillus plantarum (DR7) and grape seed extract.
The Siberian rhubarb root is at a 4 mg dose. It has been shown to reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes by 83%, mood swings and irritability by 66%. The rhubarb root helps with night sweats, vaginal dryness, fatigue, sleeplessness, heart racing, low sex drive, bladder problems, and joint and muscle discomfort. The Siberian rhubarb root targets hot flashes, mood swings and irritability.
The rhubarb root works by mimicking estrogen and helps the body to adjust to the rapidly declining estrogen levels usually encountered during perimenopause and menopause.
Meanwhile, DR7 is a patented probiotic that has been shown in clinical trials to support the gut-brain axis, directly improving mood and promoting healthy cortisol levels.
Lastly, the grape seed extract at a dose of 300 mg is high in proanthocyanidins. It has been shown to help reduce perceived stress and support the improvement of symptoms related to menopause.
Additionally, Fan Club is packaged in recyclable and ocean-bound plastic.
NPD for menopausal support soars
Industry players have been interested in developing products that target and relieve menopause symptoms. In this space, Country Life Vitamins unveiled a Women’s Line, with menopausal symptom support featured in The Menopause Rescue complex. Also, Pharmactive’s Affron ingredient, a saffron extract, was linked to improved psychological symptoms in perimenopausal women in a study.
Meanwhile, Ami Wellness previously launched a pain relief line based on adaptogen ingredients that target symptoms of PMS and menopause.
