Hot Pepper Ingredient Shown to Possess Fat Burning Properties

Oct 12 2010 --- Results announced from a study undertaken at the University of Memphis by Bloomer et al published in Lipids in Health and Disease found the proprietary hot red pepper extract Capsimax from OmniActive to promote a lipolytic effect as measured by an increase in free fatty acids and glycerol in blood compared to placebo. In addition to demonstrating this beneficial effect, Capsimax had no adverse impact on heart rate, systolic or diastolic blood pressure. There were also no observed side effects related to gastric upset or discomfort despite the fact that individuals fasted for 12 hours prior to the supplementation.
Twenty subjects - 10 men and 10 women - participated in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study, comparing the result of 100 mg of Capsimax or a placebo. Upon overnight fasting for more than 12 hours, subjects were given either Capsimax or a placebo. Blood samples were then taken during each visit at various time-points: 30 minutes pre-ingestion; 2 hours post ingestion of either Capsimax or placebo (2 hour); one minute following the cessation of 30 minutes of exercise (2.5); and 90 minutes after exercise (4 hour). Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured at all blood collection times in addition to catecholamine data and free fatty acids and glycerol values.
The following were the results/findings:
• No observed side effects related to gastric upset or discomfort in the 4 hours after ingestion, even after a 12 hour fast.
• Plasma free-fatty acids increased after ingestion at 2 hours (pre-exercise) and 2.5 hours (post-exercise) compared to placebo.
• Plasma glycerol concentrations increased significantly 4 hours after ingestion.
• Capsimax at 100 mg did not adversely affect heart rate, systolic or diastolic blood pressure.
Capsimax in combination with exercise was seen to help increase plasma free fatty acid concentration and glycerol compared to a placebo under the same conditions. These higher levels of free fatty acid levels and glycerol indicate lipolytic activity due to the capsaicinoids present in Capsimax. "Lipolysis" is a process where fat cells break down the triglycerides present within them into glycerol and free fatty acids. An increase in lipolysis may offer improved chances of weight control.
