Grøntvedt Biotech unveils herring-based cetoleic acid and omega 3 for heart health

25 Oct 2022 --- Grøntvedt Biotech, a Norway-based biotech company, is introducing its cetoleic acid and omega 3 oil derived from Norwegian herring and showcasing the product at SupplySide West, Las Vegas, US. The product may stimulate the body’s production of omega 3 by encouraging cells to make EPA and DHA.

“Our product, which contains cetoleic acid and omega 3, enables consumers to have double action or delivery of omega 3 – EPA or DHA in its natural form in the actual oil and also through the production of the cetoleic acid boost in the body,” Henrik Traaholt, chief commercial officer at Grøntvedt Biotech, tells NutritionInsight.

Regarding health benefits, Traaholt explains that an increased omega 3 index is beneficial for cardiovascular health.

“There will be more science on cetoleic acid going forward on cardiovascular health, brain health, joint and especially skin health,” he adds. “Cetoleic acid will boost the human body’s omega 3 EPA or DHA production. Studies have shown it will boost it by 40%.”

“High levels of cetoleic acid are found in North Atlantic pelagic fish. Grøntvedt Biotech is a newly established company, a spin-off from Grøntvedt Group and we are in the process with customers for consumer launches in key nutraceutical markets globally.”

Ingredient traceability
The company notes that Norwegian herring and mackerel have been a component of the diets of Europe and Norway for many years. Traaholt explains that the product will be brought to the worldwide market in liquid and capsule forms as “we have worked with herring and mackerel for a while and have full access to a [environmentally] sustainable marine source.”

“We are also partnering up with Orivo – an ingredient testing and certification company – to ensure complete transparency and authenticity of our Norwegian herring oil. A third-party origin certification gives our customers the confidence that our products are what we claim.”

Within the cetoleic acid space, Epax recently launched Epax Cetoleic 10, the first product in its NovusLipid category that may be beneficial for skin health.

Sensory qualities
Traaholt explains that the product is delivered fresh at the Grøntvedt plant in Norway, where immediate processing takes place from fresh fish to oil within 30 minutes, which secures good sensory qualities.

“The quick processing lowers the risk of oxidation, we’re only employing one species that is not adversely affected by ocean contaminants (herring swim neither near the surface nor at the bottom of the sea) and we have access to a state-of-the-art, low carbon footprint facility,” he adds.

Highlighting the sensory qualities, Traaholt maintains that: “There is no fishy smell or taste, so the product can be taken as a liquid which gives good dosage and effect for consumers. It can, of course, also be taken in capsule form as a stand-alone product or with other active ingredients.”

“We look forward to showcasing the product at SupplySide West and continuing dialog with nutraceutical brands in the US market,” he concludes.
