Golden Child’s R&D VP unpacks “humanized” pet nutrition and microbiome science

As pet owners increasingly demand science-backed, health-first nutrition for their furry family members, innovative brands are raising the bar. In light of the growing “humanization” of pet nutrition, Golden Child shares insights on designing health-optimized, functional animal diets and wellness supplement regimes for dogs and cats.
Nutrition Insight speaks to Blaire Aldridge, VP of R&D at Golden Child, who holds a Ph.D. in monogastric nutrition from Purdue University, US, and is a former senior manager of the Nutrition Platform team at Nestlé Purina.
Monogastric nutrition — dietary formulations for animals with a single-chambered stomach — is an area often associated with livestock animal science. Aldridge reflects on how her expertise shaped her approach to companion animal nutrition and product development.

“Because dogs and cats are monogastric species, my background translates directly to companion animal nutrition,” she explains. “More importantly, that training taught me to look beyond nutrient requirements and examine nutrition at the molecular and cellular level — how dietary components influence gene expression, ionomics, cell signaling, metabolism, and physiology.”

Holistic animal health
From nutrient-dense daily kibbles enriched with precision probiotics to specialized functional diets tailored for metabolic health, Golden Child has formulated its pet product line to target specific wellness outcomes.
When formulating for a companion animal nutrition brand, Aldridge advises studying animal health as an integrated biological system. “Pet nutrition never affects a single organ, pathway, or biomarker in isolation; a change in one area can influence outcomes elsewhere, and understanding those connections is critical to building effective nutritional strategies.”
Aldridge believes the microbiome, healthy aging, and metabolic health all have high potential in upcoming pet food formulation.She believes the future of formulation requires a more holistic, “three-dimensional” view of health — one that considers how nutrients interact across systems over time.
“The opportunity I think is most underestimated isn’t in a single technology at all: it’s collaboration. Companion animal health is too complex to understand through isolated datasets or individual research efforts. Real progress will come from bringing nutritionists, veterinarians, researchers, and industry partners together to build comprehensive datasets that integrate microbiome profiles, health outcomes, nutrition, genetics, and lifestyle.”
Aldridge adds that pet nutrition companies can also drive product design progress by borrowing from adjacent fields. “Livestock nutrition, for example, has decades of research behind concepts like ideal amino acid ratios and nutrient interactions — principles well worth exploring and validating in companion animals.”
“Some of the biggest breakthroughs may come not from starting over, but from thoughtfully applying proven science from other fields and advancing it through rigorous companion animal research.”
Emerging areas of pet nutrition
Aldridge says particular areas of nutrition research have the potential to significantly reshape pet food formulation in the coming years. “The microbiome, healthy aging, and metabolic health all have tremendous potential.”
“We’ve made real progress identifying changes in microbiome composition, gene expression, and metabolites — but we’re still learning what those changes actually mean for health.”
Reflecting the rising trend of precision probiotics, IFF recently introduced PureStrong, a gut health ingredient developed for canine digestive health. The probiotic is built around a targeted strain of Limosilactobacillus reuteri instead of a blend of generic strains originally developed for humans and livestock.
In other examples, ADM’s pet supplement Priome, containing Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145 recently demonstrated metabolic health benefits in a trial with pet dogs. The findings include a reduction in postprandial blood glucose — sugar in the blood after a meal — as well as improved digestibility and gut hormone levels.
Aldridge, however, believes the biggest opportunity isn’t discovering new ingredients, but understanding which biological characteristics and mechanisms genuinely improve outcomes.
She suggests brands may formulate more proactively if they can answer questions such as: “What defines a resilient microbiome? Which biomarkers signal healthy aging? Which metabolic pathways support longevity and vitality?”
“Rather than building diets solely around life stage or nutrient requirements, we can design foods that support lifelong health — gut resilience, metabolic balance, cognitive function, and healthy aging.”
“Humanized” pet formulas
Aldridge recognizes the impact that “humanized” pet diets increasingly have on product innovation, as more owners apply their own health, wellness, and ingredient standards to their pets. “Most dog owners consider them to be part of the family, so it’s only natural to want the best for them and help them live as long as they can, without disease or discomfort.”
“Pet nutrition has always tracked human nutrition trends, because pet owners are the decision-makers. They encounter new wellness concepts through grocery stores, social media, and everyday conversation, and they naturally want to bring those ideas to their pets’ health.”
She concedes that while there is plenty to learn from human nutrition — ingredient quality, functional ingredients, and how nutrition contributes to overall vitality — formulators cannot assume that what works in humans automatically works in dogs and cats.
“Companion animals have distinct nutritional physiology, and every ingredient has to be evaluated in the context of the complete diet,” she stresses. “A functional ingredient may offer a benefit while also contributing vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients that have to be accounted for and not used blindly.”
Without that evaluation, she warns that there can be a risk of creating nutritional imbalances “in the name of innovation.”
“That’s why at Golden Child, we prioritize strong formulation practices, analytical testing, and feeding research that remain essential. Innovation should be encouraged — but guided by evidence, so the products we make are both safe and truly beneficial.”
