Gnosis sheds light on strengthening bones and curbing fractures ahead of World Osteoporosis Day
10 Oct 2023 --- Ahead of World Osteoporosis Day, coming up on October 20, Gnosis by Lesaffre sheds light on two new studies spotlighting its ingredients’ ability to prevent hip fractures and bone loss in healthy postmenopausal women.
The brand — which specializes in active ingredients, nutritional yeasts, probiotics and prebiotics — says the two studies reveal the need for individuals to take precautionary measures to prevent the deterioration in bone health.
“At Gnosis, we offer clinically validated ingredients that support health and well-being on numerous fronts,” says Xavier Berger, global market manager with Gnosis by Lesaffre.
“From a bone-health perspective, our MenaQ7 vitamin K2 as MK-7 is leading the charge.”
Bone density reduces hip fractures
The Dubbo osteoporosis epidemiology study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research focused on the prevention of hip fractures and represents one of the longest-running studies on osteoporosis worldwide. It included more than 3,000 individuals over 60 years of age tracked over time for fracture incidence and risk factors.
Researchers found that between the first cohort in 1988–92 and the second in 1999–2001, bone mineral density (BMD) increased by 3%, while during the same period, there was a 45% decrease in hip fractures, a decline typically associated with a 10% rise in BMD.
The scientists concluded that “a population-wide strategy aiming at enhancing BMD across the entire population could lead to a substantial decrease in the incidence of hip fractures.”
Gnosis expresses excitement about this year’s published findings, as they serve as a reminder that it is not just patients aware of compromised bone health who should be vigilant in finding ways to support their bone health.
The company further asserts the need for everyone to remain alert to this, as BMD is a crucial component of holistic health, regardless of a person’s current bone and joint health.Recent studies suggest a link between vitamin K levels and normal bone health.
Reducing hip fractures postmenopause
The three-year study focusing on hip fractures and bone loss in healthy postmenopausal women published in Osteoporosis International revealed that the Gnosis MenaQ7 K2 supplementation significantly improved vitamin K status outside the liver.
The participants were given a daily administration of the supplement at a dose of 180 mcg.
It was further shown to reduce the age-related decline in bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in bone areas prone to weakening, such as the lumbar spine and femoral neck.
The supplement was also shown to have an overall positive effect on bone strength.
“These findings strongly suggest that taking vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 supplements can help inhibit bone loss and enhance bone strength.” Berger adds: ”MenaQ7 is the best-researched K2 as MK-7 for preserving bone health, not only in adults but children, too.”
“This new study underscores the opportunity for the population to consume vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 to protect their BMC and BMD as they age to remain active and vibrant in their later years.”
The recent findings are also said to support the notion that there is a link between maintaining healthy vitamin K levels and normal bone health, which is also endorsed by the European Food Safety Authority.
This September, Gnosis by Lesaffre MenaQ7 vitamin K12 received validation by the European Society of Cardiology for its positive effect on the cardiovascular performance of postmenopausal women.
Last year, research revealed that the Gnosis MenaQ7 vitamin K2 as MK-7 supports healthy aging by lowering oxidative stress and increasing Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production.
