Gaia Herbs releases plant-based lung support formulas to US market amid COVID-19 and wildfire crises
12 Nov 2020 --- US-based Gaia Herbs is launching a range of herbal products touted for supporting respiratory health. Three varieties of plant-based herbal formulas will be rolled out across the US throughout November.
The company says it has developed the products in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in wildfires across the west coast of North America, both of which are raising public concerns over worsening air quality and its consequences on lung health.
“Our new formulas provide effective, plant-based support before and during a respiratory challenge and also help people maintain lung health all year long,” says Angela McElwee, president and CEO of Gaia Herbs.
“With poor air quality due to wildfires across the West and other environmental pollution, as well as COVID-19 cases continuing to climb, we have seen a heightened focus on respiratory health this year,” she adds.
“For all of these reasons and more, people are increasingly seeking plant-based, natural wellness solutions to help support their lung health.”
Three products to “breathe with ease”
The new products are formulated without using chemical fertilizers, pesticides and do not contain genetically modified ingredients or seeds. All are certified vegan, as well as being free from dairy, gluten and soy.
Mighty Lungs: A blend combining adaptogenic and respiratory-supporting herbs that the company claims support lung function and helps maintain long-term lung health. The formula contains herbs, including mullein, plantain, Schisandra and elecampane, traditionally used as lung and respiratory tonics.
Sinus Comfort: This product is developed for seasonal transitions, particularly in winter, when the immune system requires extra support. Sinus Comfort contains a blend of respiratory and sinus supportive herbs, including yarrow, plantain, bayberry and Gaia-grown nettle.
Black Seed Oil: Also known as nigella, the herb has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to support lung health and help maintain the respiratory system. The single herb extract helps to keep lungs working optimally and efficiently, claims the company.
Gaia Herbs uses cold-pressed oil, which maintains the nigella plant’s natural integrity and balance, while keeping the extract as close to the original plant as possible. Ingredients used in the new products are also grown on a certified organic farm in North Carolina or sourced from trusted farms using sustainable practices.
Lung health claims on the rise
NutritionInsight reported that with consumers paying more attention to health claims than ever before, a lucrative opportunity exists for industry to use science-backed claims to promote products.
US-company PLT Health Solutions gained a license this year to market its AlbioLife ingredient in Canada as a respiration supporter. Also derived from boswellia, the ingredient was shown in clinical trials to improve overall respiratory health, maintain clear airways, help against environmental exposure and soothe respiratory tissues.
PLT notes that respiratory health is currently top of consumers’ minds, and the ingredient can therefore work both as a standalone and as a compliment to immune-support ingredients.
