Lallemand Health Solutions and FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ synbiotic unveils proven gut health benefits

Global gut health leaders Lallemand Health Solutions and FrieslandCampina Ingredients have entered a new phase in their collaboration on the synbiotic concept, Natural PRO-Digest. The companies underscore that this latest advancement boosts the synergistic power of combining probiotics and prebiotics.

The ingredient combines Lallemand’s B. lactis Lafti B94 and FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ high-purity galactooligosaccharide (GOS) prebiotic Biotis GOS-OP to support gut health, comfort, and overall well-being. The companies also highlight that scientific and consumer data back the efficacy of both ingredients.

Scientific validation

The companies spotlight that the Natural PRO-Digest synbiotic solution is evaluated using a dual approach that combines lab-based research and a human consumer study. 

Using SIFR (systemic intestinal fermentation research) colon simulation technology, researchers found that the combination of Lafti B94 and Biotis GOS-OP High Purity increases gut microbiota activity while boosting short-chain fatty acid production, which the companies state are key indicators of a healthy digestive environment.

“Prebiotic Biotis GOS-OP High Purity increases Bifidobacterium in the gut, promotes comfort, and has a positive influence on occasional constipation in adults by increasing defecation frequency and easing,” explains Sophie Zillinger, Global Marketing Lead at FrieslandCampina Ingredients. “This prebiotic also reduces gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating and flatulence.”

Results of the trial

These mechanistic effects were mirrored in a real-life consumer trial involving 107 participants aged 18 to 65. Over a 28-day period, participants consumed one daily sachet containing the synbiotic blend and completed self-reported gut comfort assessments.

The results show participants noticed a significant improvement in gut comfort within one week and sustained benefits throughout the full four-week study. Over 50% of the participants experienced noticeable relief from gastrointestinal issues.

Some participants reported improvements in their overall quality of life — including better performance in daily activities and less anxiety linked to digestive discomfort.

“Selected from among 40 Bifidobacteria strains for its good synergy with prebiotics, probiotic B. lactis Lafti B94 has been studied in nine clinical studies on gut health from infancy to adulthood,” says Romane Maillet, the marketing group manager at Lallemand Health Solutions.
