Dietitians demand tighter food labelling regulations
Study finds some low-carbohydrate foods unsuitable for dieting.
11/08/05 Australia, Dietitians have called for tighter food labelling regulations on low-carbohydrate foods after a study found some unsuitable for dieting.
Dietitians Association of Australia spokesman Alan Barclay said food labelling standards should be more stringent, after a study of low-carb foods was published in consumer magazine Choice.
The study compared the fat, kilojoules and carbohydrate levels of 17 low-carb processed foods with those of conventional processed foods.
It found that the low-carb foods would not necessarily aid weight loss, said Choice food policy officer Clare Hughes.
The study also found that the low-carb foods could cost up to 500 per cent more.
