Cognis and Laboratoires Sérobiologiques Using Formulation Expertise to Create Solutions that Amaze

13 May 2010 --- Cognis Care Chemicals and its active ingredients business Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS) presented their latest well-being solutions for the personal care market at the NYSCC Suppliers’ Day in Edison, New Jersey. As part of its new “It’s Magic” concept, Cognis highlighted high-tech formulations that it has created using its comprehensive technological expertise. Innovative products on show included a nature-based alternative to cyclomethicones, natural oils, a PEG/EO-free dispersion polymer, plus several active ingredients that help skin stay youthful and beautiful.

It includes formulations developed to amaze consumers in the same way a magician does. These were carefully created using state-of-art technology, and combine sophisticated aesthetics and proven active ingredients. The concept is based on five platforms: silicone-free, phase inversion temperature (PIT), switch oil phase (SWOP), cationic systems and anhydrous solutions. For each platform, the concept explains the unique properties of the different technologies, describes the benefits they can deliver and showcases various sample formulations.

Innovative ingredients for nature-based personal care applications
Among the new ingredients presented by Cognis at the Suppliers’ Day was Cetiol C5. This new, Ecocert-approved emollient can be used as a substitute for cyclomethicones. It spreads very quickly and has a pleasant, dry skin feel – like cyclomethicones. The product is ideal for facial, body, sun and hair care products, as well as decorative cosmetics.

With Cegesoft SB and Cegesoft SB Organic, Cognis further enlarges its portfolio of natural oils: These natural, unaltered types of shea butter, extracted from the nuts of wild-growing plants, are pleasant in both color and odor. They also melt on contact with the skin, offering consumers a holistic wellness experience. Both products are ideal for use in all kinds of green personal care formulation. In addition, Cegesoft SB Organic is Ecocert-certified as a 100% organic ingredient, and also meets the requirements of numerous other environmental certification bodies.

Cognis also presented a new rheology modifier at the Suppliers’ Day: Cosmedia Triple C, a next-generation liquid cationic dispersion polymer. This PEG/EO-free product improves the viscosity and stability of skin and hair formulations, while also offering outstanding sensory and conditioning properties. It is significantly more tolerant towards electrolytes than conventional solutions and offers a pleasantly dry silky feel on the skin. It also measurably improves the combability of both wet and dry hair.

Preserving the skin’s beauty with effective active ingredients
Among the latest innovations from LS on show at Suppliers’ Day was Eterniskin, an extract of the maitake mushroom that supports anti-aging and anti-stress marketing claims in personal care products. This new active ingredient helps prevent accelerated aging of the skin and restores its balance. It stimulates the formation of collagens in the dermis and at the dermo-epidermal junction, thereby increasing skin elasticity and firmness. Its effectiveness has been proven in both in vitro tests and clinical studies.

Another new LS product with a clinically proven effect on skin elasticity and firmness is Elestan. This extract of the leaves of an African tree has a dual mechanism: firstly, it protects the skin by inhibiting elastase and reducing glycation; and secondly, it repairs the skin, by promoting the synthesis of tropoelastin and elastin-associated proteins. Elestan is available in a preservative free liquid version and in a powder version, which has been certified as organic by Ecocert Greenlife.1

Radianskin is LS’s latest skin whitening solution. It visibly lightens the skin, and at the same time helps to protect it against UV-induced damage. The product has no effect on formulation color, and has excellent tolerability. It is a pure single molecule, with a mode of action that clearly differentiates it from the tyrosinase inhibitors commonly used for this purpose.
