Chobani unveils probiotic plant-based drinks and lactose-free yogurts
The ranges include plant-based, high-protein, gut-health friendly and no added sugars NPD
22 Jul 2020 --- In line with current gut health trends, US Greek yogurt brand Chobani has unveiled two new offerings that are touted as being high in protein, probiotic-filled and include zero added sugars. Debuting this month in retail stores across the US are Chobani Probiotic, a range of refreshing and fruity plant-based beverages, and Chobani Complete, a line of lactose-free Greek yogurts. The launches contain protein and amino acids to cater to busy consumer lifestyles, the company says.
Innova Market Insights data show that probiotic supplements and functional foods NPD are on the rise, with an 11 percent rise in F&B launches with a digestive health claim (Global, 2014-2018). Moreover, there is a 17 percent growth in launches with a “probiotic” claim and a 10 percent growth in launches with a “fermentation” claim for the same period.
in recent months. Additionally, 43 percent say that overall health aspects have become more important to their F&B purchases.
Moreover, in 2019, 94 percent of probiotic supplements launches included a digestive/liver health claim, while 49 percent were touted as supporting immune health, according to the market researcher’s data. This trend is especially pronounced in light of the pandemic, which induced efforts for a holistic route to immunity. According to a March consumer survey from Innova Market Insights, nearly 40 percent of US consumers are eating and drinking more products that boost the immune system“With every trip to the store, consumers are looking to do more than just fill their bellies. They want healthier foods and drinks to calm their minds, restore their bodies and replenish their energy,” highlights Peter McGuinness, President of Chobani.
“Natural nutrition is a driving focus of our future. We’re happy to launch Chobani Probiotic and Chobani Complete, which is loaded with up to 25 g of protein, to the aisles. Each has a combination of flavor and function, and is packed with probiotics and other key nutrients for busy, on-the-go modern families,” McGuinness adds.
A functional kick
The new Chobani Probiotic drinks range has a base of whole grain oats and fruit juices. It is also fermented with a blend of probiotic cultures to support digestive and immune health. The products are then combined with a blend of organic fruit and herbal extracts with a light effervescence into “the perfect combination of flavor and function,” the company explains.
Chobani Probiotic is a convenient way for consumers who are looking to continue their wellness journey by tapping into the functional food and beverages trend, Chobani notes. Chobani Probiotic drinks are available in Lemon Ginger, Pineapple Turmeric, Peach Mint, and Cherry Hibiscus tea, packaged in a 14 oz bottle.
Moreover, all Chobani Probiotic beverages are certified organic and are made with non-GMO ingredients. Each bottle has 80 calories with 11 g of sugar, and contains billions of probiotics. Furthermore, they don’t contain any sweetener ingredients, such as cane sugar or honey. Instead, the sweetness comes from the natural process of enzymes breaking down the oats, creating an environment for the company’s six live and active cultures to thrive.
Solving the nutrition puzzle?
The second range to launch this month, Chobani Complete is a high-protein and easy to digest lactose-free yogurt with 0 g of added sugars. This new Greek Yogurt platform is a balanced, nutritious option for busy consumers and can serve as the ideal pre- or post-workout fuel to maintain energy levels, the company explains.
The range is available in three different formats: 5.3 oz cups are available in Blueberry, Key Lime, Vanilla, Strawberry, Mixed Berry, and Peach; 10 fl oz shakes are available in Banana Cream, Mixed Berry Vanilla, Strawberry Cream, and Vanilla; and lastly 24 oz tubs are available in Vanilla.
Every Chobani Complete product has 15-25 g of complete protein and is a good source of fiber, as well as being diabetes-friendly, gluten-free and lactose-free. In addition, the company notes that the range offers a full set of 20 nutritionally-important amino acids, including all nine essential amino acids.
Like the probiotic drinks, this range also contains billions of probiotics, but also includes prebiotic fibers so the body can get the “best of both worlds” via this trending synergy. NutritionInsight previously reported on pre- and probiotic synergies and their NPD potential.
“While the probiotic cultures support digestive and immune health, prebiotic fibers are a triple threat as they help keep digestion on track, keeping one feeling full and satisfied, and taste naturally sweet, without adding sugar to the product,” Chobani says.
Previously the company launched a range of Greek yogurts combined with nut butters, such as almond, hazelnut and cashew. The new Chobani Greek Yogurt with Nut Butters line is packed with protein and a healthy balance of fats, the company notes. They are also made with 30 percent less sugar than other yogurts.
