Canadian Dietary Fibre Claim for Inulin Opens Marketing Doors
ORAFTI Active Food Ingredients said that Health Canada’s decision to classify Beneo inulin as a dietary fibre means that their Beneo inulin range sold in Canada can now be labelled as a dietary fibre as this is already the case in the rest of the world.
18/07/06 Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch approved the classification of inulin as a dietary fibre in Canada on March 3rd 2006,, a decision that will allow ORAFTI to label its Beneo inulin range as a “dietary fibre”.
ORAFTI Active Food Ingredients said that Health Canada’s decision to classify Beneo inulin as a dietary fibre is great news for the company and means that their Beneo inulin range sold in Canada can now be labelled as a dietary fibre as this is already the case in the rest of the world.
Health Canada’s decision to review the classification of Beneo inulin was based on detailed analytical data, including:
· Inulin occurring endogenously in plant foods meets the current definition of dietary fibre used by Health Canada.
· On a dry matter basis, the concentration of inulin in the daily diet and the inulin in ORAFTI products are of the same order (of magnitude).
· The overall chemical structure, composition and chain length distribution of native inulin (chicory root) are similar to the ones of the extracted and purified ORAFTI products
Dominic Speleers, Vice President Sales & Marketing from ORAFTI commented: ” I am delighted to see that ORAFTI’s dedication to science and regulatory affairs has allowed us to get Beneo inulin approved as a Dietary Fibre in Canada. The Canadian food industry was waiting for this in order to reactivate many projects of new products. We will continue to support them with our range of services including consumer insight and communication”.
Health Canada are currently reviewing a decision on the classification and labelling of oligofructose, pending the completion of their review of definition and policies on dietary fibre.
Meanwhile Orafti announced that at this year’s FISA in São Paulo, ORAFTI Active Food Ingredients will present opportunities for the food industry to develop new products with bone health claims, what is even more exciting, is how food and beverage manufacturers can benefit from the experience and success of the Beneo program and its communication to prescribers and consumers.
1) Bone Health claims now possible
The results of the latest studies commissioned by ORAFTI into the effects of Beneo Synergy1 offer untold opportunities for making powerful claims. Products containing Beneo Synergy1 can now be marketed as proven to improve bone health. As well as calcium absorption claims, claims such as “Increases Bone Mineral Density and Bone Mineral Content” are possible. At present, no other functional ingredient can make these claims, giving the industry a unique selling point. Whether you are looking to develop a product aimed at maximising bone health in children or minimising calcium loss in middle-aged customers, you can capitalise on the science that supports Beneo Synergy1. The versatile ingredient can be incorporated into staple foods – from fruit juices to yogurts and cereal bars – as well as functional foods. Even calcium enriched products can benefit from Beneo Synergy1.
2) Beneo program also in Latin America
This year the Beneo program was made available worldwide to help its customers communicate, in a simple and efficient way, the nutritional benefits of Beneo inulin and oligofructose.
There are 3 main advantages for food producers in Latin America, which incorporate the Beneo ingredients into their products. Firstly, it brings scientific credibility. An independent scientific committee supports and approves claims that are put forward by ORAFTI. Secondly there are already a number of communication channels in place that regularly highlight the Beneo ingredients and thirdly ORAFTI offers an extensive consumer insight into digestive health. ORAFTI’s vast experience in all regions can help ensure that new or improved existing products will be a success. With a considerable catalogue of experience to hand ORAFTI can guide a food producer through a jungle of decisions.
The Beneo symbol will appear on the packaging of food and drink products participating in the Beneo Program. This will enable consumers to instantly recognise products which have real benefits for health and well-being. There are already more than 150 products within various European countries that successfully communicate the benefits of Beneo inulin and oligofructose thanks to the communication program. The use of the Beneo symbol is now being widened worldwide and the possibilities for the Latin American manufacturers will be highlighted at FISA 2006.
