Bayir achieves patent approval for “groundbreaking” curcumin nanoparticles
26 Sep 2017 --- Bayir Inc., a manufacturer of ingredients for the dietary supplement, functional food & beverage and nutraceutical industries, has announced the approval of a process patent synthesizing curcumin nanoparticles. The nanoparticles have been developed using the New Jersey, US-based company’s in-house technology.
This patent approval holds great promise for formulators as it offers more versatility in applications of curcumin, the company notes.
“Bayir has had a long-standing interest in nanoparticle technology,” Sendhil Pani, Bayir President, tells NutritionInsight. “The market has really pressed on the need for more bioavailable and readily soluble forms of ingredients, particularly curcumin. Our new nanoparticle formulation, along with the micronized product variants technology, allows for more diverse and ‘user-friendly’ applications, including food, beverage and OTC formulations.”

“The new patent offers groundbreaking applications for formulators,” says B.G. Bairy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Bayir Group. “We have been testing nanoparticle applications for a number of years, the impetus being the increasing demand from the consumer market for innovative applications of curcumin.”
Exciting research
Bayir uses its extraction process to obtain the “purest and most concentrated” forms of its organic ingredients, including curcumin. The company maintains nine manufacturing facilities worldwide with specialties including bacopa, glucosamine, chondroitin, organic extracts, and a wide range of botanicals such as garcinia cambogia.
An exciting area of research for the group has focused on using inhibitory pathways to address cognitive health and even cancer cell apoptosis. A pioneering study from UCLA found that curcumin might help the macrophages to clear the amyloid plaques found in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
“Because of the greater absorption and water dispersion, Nanotechnology really provides an opportunity to study the impact of conditions that extend beyond the blood-brain barrier,” notes Pani. “This holds great promise for areas of medicine such as stroke, ADHD and other types of disorders.”
Bayir, Inc. has indicated that it will continue to invest in research for nanotechnology applications, with focus on curcumin and water dispersion. Nanoparticles are a relatively cost-effective approach for the treatment for disease, Pani notes.
Pani points to a recent study from the University of Central Florida in which scientists examined nanoparticles of curcumin in relation to death in tumor cells. The nanoparticles were found to be an effective delivery vehicle in the treatment of diseased cells.
The study demonstrated the successful administration of curcumin to a target site with minimal cytotoxic effects. “This development really holds great promise for nanotechnology applications,” says Pani.
Looking to the future, Bayir Group, the parent company of Bayir, Inc., recently announced two rounds of B Series Funding, which will be allocated for future expansion of the business. Pani tells NutritionInsight that part of the new funds will be used to support operation of a fermentation facility in Pune, India, which will be geared specifically towards the production of thiocolchicoside, a muscle relaxant with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Bayir has developed and patented an in-house fermentation method to produce thiocolchicoside among its wide array of premium quality ingredients. Bayir will also develop its interest in testing high-purity chemicals (products with 95 percent or greater purity). “Less product is required with greater purity so this has great potential for formulators,” says Pani.
