Balchem Introduces Rumen-Protected Lysine
The bottom-line is that while lysine is widely recognized as one of the most limiting amino acids for dairy nutrition with proven performance benefits to its supply, the industry has lacked a practical and consistent tool.
09/10/08 The first proven rumen-protected lysine for use in dairy rations was introduced by the Animal Nutrition and Health Division of Balchem at World Dairy Expo, October 1, in Madison, Wisc. "AminoShure-L gives nutritionists and dairy producers a long awaited source of rumen-protected lysine", says Dr. Dana Putnam, Vice President and General Manager of Balchem Animal Nutrition and Health. "It provides the industry with a precise and consistent source of lysine that can be used in concert with or replacement of typical feed sources of lysine which are often low or inconsistent sources of lysine."
"AminoShure-L permits precise ration formulations that more closely approximate the animal’s lysine requirements without the excesses of crude protein that typically accompany the lysine found in conventional feed ingredients. This opens the door to higher milk production with desired milk component levels and, equally important, to less nitrogen excreted as waste."
Research has clearly shown that limitations in lysine supply to the dairy cow will limit milk component levels and milk production. However, the cow cannot synthesize adequate quantities of lysine herself to meet this demand and for most protein supplements, the lysine content falls short of the proportions required by the cow. The bottom-line is that while lysine is widely recognized as one of the most limiting amino acids for dairy nutrition with proven performance benefits to its supply, the industry has lacked a practical and consistent tool to use to meet this demand until now.
During the past 20 years, many companies have tried to develop a rumen-protected lysine, but without success. Balchem’s position as the global leader in nutrient delivery technology, including over 100 different encapsulated products for the animal, human and industrial markets, has put it in a unique position to solve this type of challenge. Aminoshure-L is the culmination of an intensive six year research program, benefiting from Balchem’s GROWING proprietary encapsulation technology, to successfully bypass the rumen, reaching (or targeting) the small intestine, where it is readily released and absorbed.
