AX3 Life’s Bio-Pure Astaxanthin shows promise in extending lifespan, experts reveal
07 Dec 2023 --- A new study involving Bio-Pure Astaxanthin, the flagship supplement of the AX3 Life human longevity company, demonstrated a significant lifespan extension in male laboratory mice. The research was conducted by the esteemed Interventions Testing Program (ITP) and funded by the National Institute on Aging, part of the US National Institutes of Health.
“This study provides a new pathway in the quest to advance human longevity because astaxanthin is the first agent in the ITP’s 20-year history to demonstrate a greater than 10% increase in lifespan that is also exceptionally safe for chronic use and broadly accessible as a dietary supplement,” says Dave Watumull, AX3 Life co-founder, CEO and co-author of the scientific paper reporting these findings.
“This study underscores why astaxanthin, and in particular AX3 Bio-Pure Astaxanthin, should be a key part of everyone’s longevity regimen,” he adds.
The product demonstrated a 12% increase in the median lifespan of male mice, presenting a statistically significant outcome. This effect was consistently observed throughout the mice’s lifespans, starting the dosing regimen when they were middle-aged.
The paper, recently published in GeroScience, explores the impact of various compounds on the lifespan of genetically heterogeneous mice. The study, conducted at multiple sites, including the University of Texas San Antonio, University of Michigan and The Jackson Laboratory, aimed to identify interventions that could extend lifespan and provide insights into aging processes.
Astaxanthin is known for its antioxidant properties and has previously been clinically observed to extend the lifespan in non-mammalian models. These most recent findings represent the first evaluation of the chemical in a mammalian lifespan model.
The study also evaluated five other compounds: fisetin, SG1002 (hydrogen sulfide donor), dimethyl fumarate, mycophenolic acid and 4-phenylbutyrate. None of these compounds showed a significant impact on lifespan at the tested doses and schedules in either sex.
“After 25 years of working to advance the research and development of astaxanthin, we are thrilled to see astaxanthin’s utility for longevity demonstrated in this reputable, independent study,” says David Watumull, AX3 Life Co-Founder and co-author.
“Our mission is to help people live longer, healthier lives. If you extrapolate these results to humans, it could translate to a median lifespan increase of nearly a decade, showing the power astaxanthin may have to transform lives.”
The study notes that the observed male-specific lifespan benefits raise questions about the sex-specific aspects of aging. While the intervention increased the median lifespan in males, it did not significantly affect the female lifespan. Further investigations into the underlying mechanisms and sex-specific responses are warranted.
In addition to its potential to prolong the mammalian lifespan, other benefits associated with astaxanthin include improved mood, immunity and microbiome.
Last year, Algalif and Divi’s Nutraceuticals launched astaxanthin beadlets with science-backed health benefits, including the protection of the cells from free radicals and oxidative stress, reducing inflammation and supporting cognitive health.
