AlphaWave L-theanine drives shift toward stress-relief and focus in functional coffee market

Coffee is undergoing a quiet transformation, with consumers increasingly seeking more than just a caffeine boost. Many functional beverages now feature AlphaWave L-theanine, a branded ingredient clinically shown to promote calm, mental clarity, and reduced anxiety, without drowsiness. 

L-theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid in green tea, is known for its calming properties. AlphaWave is formulated to amplify these benefits. The ingredient is fully water-soluble, flavor-neutral, and stable across various temperatures and pH levels, which the brand notes makes it well-suited for ready-to-drink applications.

The shift toward L-theanine comes as brands seek to add functional value to traditional caffeinated products. Caffeine increases beta brainwave activity — linked to alertness and restlessness — but AlphaWave has been shown to significantly increase alpha brainwave activity, which is associated with relaxed wakefulness and reduced stress. 

Ethical Naturals notes that this effect has been validated in multiple peer-reviewed clinical studies, which also confirmed the ingredient’s safety and efficacy.

“Though history has found the benefits of caffeine and L-theanine in green tea, several modern scientific studies have verified the benefits of adding L-theanine to caffeine products,” details Bewicke. 

Studies have reported improved mental focus, reduced nervous tension, and enhanced mood without causing sedation. The findings support AlphaWave’s use in products that combine caffeine with nootropic and adaptogenic ingredients, including lion’s mane, reishi, and chaga mushrooms, which are gaining popularity in the functional beverage sector.

The ingredient is generally recognized as safe in the US, and it is the only source of L-theanine approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

There is a growing consumer demand for beverages with added functionality, such as vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, probiotics, and herbal extracts. Earlier this year, Glanbia Nutritionals detailed key trends driving this functional beverage market: refreshing taste, quick consumption, and hydrating benefits. 

Moreover, Innova Market Insights data indicates a growing market for mental health products. The data suggests a 14% year-over-year growth for supplement launches with brain-mood health claims from October 2022 to September 2024. Moreover, 30% of these launches consisted of botanical or herbal supplements. 

Mushrooms for mental health benefits are also growing in popularity; the market researcher’s data indicates a 90% CAGR growth in the use of chaga mushrooms for mental health between October 2019 and September 2024. 

Research also continues to explore the health benefits of caffeine, with one study suggesting that women consuming up to five caffeinated coffees daily in midlife are more likely to be healthy agers. Another study showed that a daily cup of caffeinated coffee may lower all-cause mortality risk by 16%.
