ADM ramps up probiotics production five-fold with new facility in Spain
26 Oct 2020 --- ADM has announced plans to construct a new facility in Spain to increase the company’s probiotics production five-fold. This is to meet the growing demand for microbiome solutions.
The plant will be co-located with ADM’s flavor production facility in Valencia and is expected to be fully operational by 2022.
“Our Valencia facility will feature leading-edge technology and dramatically enhance our ability to meet the fast-growing demand for products and solutions from nature designed to target the microbiome and help improve metabolic health,” says Ian Pinner, chief strategy and innovation officer and president of ADM’s Health & Wellness division.
“Consumers today are increasingly focusing on the foundational role food plays in supporting health and wellness, and our continued investment in these growth areas ensures that ADM is perfectly positioned to meet their needs,” Pinner explains.
The new facility represents an increase in production capacity through ADM’s Biopolis, a leading microbial technology provider based in Spain.
Moreover, it will produce a wide array of science-based probiotics and postbiotics. This is in order to meet the growing demand for new solutions for healthy weight management, skin health, immune health, gut health, oral health and fertility, the company says.
“Consumers today are thinking about the things they eat and drink in entirely new ways,” Pinner continues.
“They expect food and beverages that are not only delicious, but support health and wellness, come from sustainable ingredients and are produced by companies that share their values.”
A history of growth investments
ADM has made several growth investments in recent years to meet those changing consumer needs, from alternative proteins to sustainable ingredients, flavors and colors, to an array of pre-, pro- and postbiotics.
Recently, ADM announced that it is developing “signaling ingredients” that help consumers make a link between functional foods and health benefits. Dr. Janice Rueda, ADM’s vice president of nutrition science business development, spoke to NutritionInsight about this method of tapping into consumers’ associations between flavor and well-being.
Moreover, ADM Biopolis and Hospital de Sagunto, in Spain, previously launched a clinical trial into the effects of administering a food supplement containing three of ADM’s live probiotic strains on COVID-19 patients.
Lastly, consumer understanding of the microbiome and the role of fiber, as well as pre-, pro- and postbiotics, has changed considerably in recent years. This is according to Ipek Erdogan-Trinkaus, vice president of global marketing in health & wellness at ADM, who previously told NutritionInsight why Fibersol dietary fiber ingredients address a range of consumer needs – old and new alike.
