FiE 2024: HTBA showcases Cardiose’s performance-boosting benefits in active nutrition

06 Dec 2024 | HTBA (HealthTech Bio Actives)

HTBA’s (HealthTech Bio Actives) chief commercial officer, Tom D’hoore spotlights Cardiose, a polyphenol derived from sweet oranges, for its functional benefits in nutrition for heart health. He also dives into studies revealing enhanced anaerobic and aerobic power, improved recovery and lean body mass development.

Hello everybody, this is William Bradford Nichols, the editor for Nutrition Insight, and I'm here live at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt, Germany.

And today we are speaking with Tom De Hoda, the chief commercial officer of HDBA.

Hello Tom, how are you today?

Very good morning.

We're excited to talk to you.

We've got some questions about your ingredients.

If it's OK, I'd like to just jump right in.

OK, so.

Basically, HTVA at HTVA we produce two types of ingredients.

On one hand, polyphenols, and on the other hand, forms, bioactive forms of vitamin B12.

With those we tackle applications in the pharma industry, functional food or dietary supplement industry, taste modulation, and animal nutrition.

Here at the show.

We are basically targeting on the one hand, taste modulation and on the other hand, functional benefits in foods and dietary supplements.

Now if we basically zoom in on the functional benefits that ours and vitamin B12 bring to end products.

We are highlighting polyphenol by the brand of cardios.

This is a polyphenol produced from sweet orange, so basically a starting material which is very recognizable for the regular consumer, and with that we target.

So basically we have conducted several diet intervention studies where we show that cardios prevent.

The development of heart disease at the very earliest stage.

It helps you to preserve a healthy.

We've looked at arterial flexibility in two published trials where we look at the impact of cardios on the, I would say healthy functioning functioning of the.

Layer of cells lining your veins where basically you help to preserve the balance between full inflammatory and anti-inflammatory challenges, vasoconstriction and vasodilatation triggers, and basically also prevent the lesion.

The place is published.

We then looked at blood pressure, which we also have a studies showing that.

We help to maintain healthy levels of basically systolic blood pressure from there with this very same ingredient we ventured into what would be active nutrition, where we've done several studies, one acute study where we basically showed that cardio enhances anaerobic power in a cycling test, an amateur cyclist.

We're in very good shape, 5000 kilometers per season.

So really top amateur cyclist where with one single dose of 500 mg we were able to show that it's advances both maximum sport and maximum.

Additionally, we went for a moment where we actually showed that we.

Aerobic recover and also we show that we modulate the energy metabolism.

So when people who exercise take cardio, they draw relatively more energy from lipids than they do.

So what we saw is that over the people.

So that's what we are really focusing on here at the show.

We have here one prototype where we bring together the best of both worlds.

So we have a technical ideation center where we help our customers formulate with functional ingredients and mod ingredients, and this is basically a strawberry flavored dragon fruit gum which we target.

Healthy active population.

OK, so 2 gummies is one relevant.

On the other hand, as I said, we also produce active forms of vitamin B12.

There we're focusing mainly on methalactin, brand for specifically for which we have here another gummy with 1 mg of.

Make them all active basically targeting, I would say healthy brain and a healthy central nervous system so.

Some of the main indications of if we then look into the future, what we see coming from 2025, we have one ongoing study inactive which will be finalized at the end of this year where we look at the impact of acute energy.

What mm.

On active performance in the psyche test and on cognitive performance, healthy, we believe that there's quite some interest from the markets in this kind of.

So that's something which we will bring to the market next year.

In parallel, we have a second trial ongoing.

This is longer term where we look at the population who are.

And have developed over time a mild B12 deficit and we're looking at how actually helps to restore healthy B12 versus placebo versus.

Then we have another trial which is also ongoing cardio where we bring together on the one hand.

And the active nutrition and we're looking there at healthy aging in people who are healthy at 65 plus and how basically it helps them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and how it impacts in muscle.

So we're really going to look at the biopsies and what impact it has on so that's and maybe just one last element to grab this.

Sup with those very same polyphnos and specifically flavor from those same families, we have other compounds which are tasteless and actually help us to a mask undesired taste and both in food matrices and supplements and so this show for us is an ideal venue to bring together.
