Protein is hot on the market right now, with more and more products with a high protein claim being launched, according to Antonio Sánchez, at FrieslandCampina DMV. As consumers become more health conscious and products intended for sports people become increasingly mainstream, proteins, which are DMV’s core business, will further grow as the division's main area for innovation. Speaking to NutritionInsight at SIAL, Sánchez discussed the company’s portfolio of functional and nutritional dairy protein ingredients. “Protein enrichment and fortified foods are significant categories that have been growing for some time and continue to do so. It is a concept and a trend that we cannot ignore,” he says.
There has been particularly strong recent development happening in the clean label mainstreaming of sports nutrition products. At Vitafoods Europe 2018, FrieslandCampina’s consumer research highlighted a need for clean ingredients as well as innovative flavor profiles. The results of a consumer study showed that 69 percent of sports nutrition consumers find all-natural ingredients to be appealing in these types of products. To address this demand, DMV has come up with native protein launches. “We are highlighting Nutri Whey native and that is some shakes, RTDs. What we highlight is how Nutri Whey native is a concept where we really try to target the millennials. We developed it together with Givaudan, where we looked at what flavor profile consumers are looking for,” says Ramon Mommersteeg at the company.
There is a big trend toward hydrolyzed proteins in performance nutrition. “It’s really part of performance nutrition, the growth of the segment. You can really see the mainstreaming part, as well as the intensity of people [who are] performing more sports and are more serious about sports,” says Ramon Mommersteeg. With an increasing number of people knowing someone in their family or friends who is practicing for a marathon, an iron man event or something similar, people are becoming more and more interested in high-quality, protein-related sports nutrition products. FrieslandCampina’s Nutri Whey Hydro product is one of the nicest hydrolyzed proteins available, the company believes.
Industry developers are targeting on the go beverage solutions, with items that incorporate between 10 and 20 grams of protein proving especially popular, a poll has identified. Diderik Moerdijk, Marketing Performance Nutrition at FrieslandCampina DMV explores the high protein beverage market segment, tipping clear protein drinks, in this webinar entitled Beyond traditional lifestyle nutrition: Moving with the times.
Protein is becoming mainstream, but for elite athletes it remains a struggle to find the right nutrition for the right time. Elite athletes look for a natural, proven concept that improves their performance. But which type of protein to use? Based on current scientific literature and our own findings, FrieslandCampina developed an ingredient that fits the needs of your most ambitious consumer.
Athletes typically consume a lot of protein to improve training adaptations and optimize recovery. Therefore they need high quality protein supplements with an excellent taste and a clean formulation. We are going to take a closer look at how these protein supplements can be a practical solution in an athlete’s daily life in preparation for the 2018 Winter Games.
Timing protein intake is a crucial part of a nutrition strategy aimed at maximizing the result of a training effort. In this science driven webinar, Jorn Trommelen demonstrates recent research that shows that protein supplementation in the evening is an excellent and effective moment for protein intake.
For every consumer there is a protein formulation that fits their needs. During this session, FrieslandCampina DMV will take you on a deep-dive into the different milk proteins available and the benefits for the athlete. In the end there is a clear conclusion on whether the quality of protein is essential or overdone for athletes to take in account after exercise.
