From K2 to B12: Innovators advance vitamins for energy, cognitive health and longevity
As the demand for next-generation wellness solutions grows, vitamin innovation is taking center stage in the nutraceutical space. Industry leaders are driving breakthroughs with high-bioavailability ingredients that offer multifunctional benefits for energy, cognitive health, and metabolic balance.
These advancements highlight opportunities for formulators and brands to develop science-backed, premium products that meet evolving consumer expectations and differentiate in a competitive market.
Nutrition Insight sits down with innovators Balchem and HTBA to discuss how they are redefining the role of vitamins in vitality and developing ingredient technologies that go beyond basic supplementation to deliver enhanced bioavailability, stability, and functionality.
From targeted formulations that support active lifestyles to solutions that address cognitive health and metabolic balance, these companies are shaping the future of how vitamins can empower consumers to feel and perform at their best.
“Vitality is multifaceted and as such, supporting it requires a multifaceted approach — going beyond individual health areas and ingredients,” says Lindsay Cole, the sales and business development manager for North America at Kappa Bioscience, now a Balchem company. “That’s exactly what we’re doing at Balchem with our Vital Trio concept.”Balchem’s Vital Trio combines K2, magnesium, and vitamin D3 for full-body support.
“This three-in-one formula brings together Balchem’s K2Vital Delta — the world’s only patented double microencapsulated, all-trans vitamin K2 MK-7 ingredient — with our Albion Minerals chelated magnesium bisglycinate and vitamin D3 for immune, cardiovascular, and bone health benefits. It’s like assembling the perfect team — each player brings their own strengths, but together they achieve a whole new level of potential.”
As proactive wellness gains momentum, Tom D’hoore, the chief commercial officer at HTBA, reveals that vitality is emerging as a cornerstone of holistic well-being. He highlights that offerings, such as HTBA’s MecobalActive, address these growing consumer demands.
“That’s why we continue innovating to empower consumers to live more vivacious, vibrant lives,” says D’Hoore. “MecobalActive, a pioneering bioidentical methylcobalamin ingredient, is an active, pure, and highly effective form of vitamin B12 that helps consumers boost their vitality so they can look and feel their best.”
“Powered by our patented green chemistry manufacturing technology, MecobalActive was designed to work harder to unleash a new dimension in cognitive and physical performance for adults of all ages, regardless of lifestyle.”
A growing market
Innova Market Insights’ data suggest an 11% average annual growth in vitamin and mineral supplement launches from July 2020 to June 2025, with products primarily targeting energy and immunity, and claims around insomnia and blood pressure also saw rapid growth during this period.
Cole spotlights vitality as a universal pursuit, spanning several demographics, from athletes optimizing performance to individuals maintaining focus and well-being with age. She points to Optifolin+, with its seven times methyl advantage, as an innovative ingredient in the holistic wellness space, designed to support energy, cognitive function, and overall health.HTBA says its MecobalActive ingredient delivers pure, bioactive B12 for lasting vitality.
“For K2Vital, we recently launched a new partnership with FC Bayern Munich Women’s football team,” she asserts. “This initiative is not just about supporting elite athletes — it’s about connecting with a huge, varied fanbase to raise awareness about how vitamin K2 can support people of all ages in building inner strength.”
“It’s a new and authentic way to educate consumers on vitamin K2 benefits for bone health — a crucial area for feeling vital, whether you’re on the field or in the stands.”
D’Hoore at HTBA agrees and says the company has also seen a broadening market for vitality-boosting ingredients.
“We believe that adults of all ages can benefit from vitality products that support daily and active performance for every kind of lifestyle,” he notes. “From those who engage in day-to-day activities and workouts to amateur and professional athletes, everyone has the potential to scale new heights in cognitive and physical performance with high-quality solutions like MecobalActive.”
Future outlooks
D’Hoore points out that natural well-being continues to gain momentum, fueled by consumer demand for clean label products and rising concerns over ultra-processed foods. For vitality-boosting vitamins, he expects demand to grow for nature-derived ingredients with strong, clean credentials that are supported by sustainable, chemical-free processing methods, which align with consumers’ evolving wellness and environmental priorities.
“That’s why we continue to invest in advancing our proprietary green chemistry processing methods that have equipped us to pioneer nature-led ingredients with outstanding performance,” he emphasizes. “Case in point: MecobalActive, our high-quality bioidentical vitamin B12 ingredient, offers higher purity and a better safety profile compared to other methylcobalamins.”Next-gen vitamin innovations are targeting energy, cognition, and metabolism.
“With gut health coming into increasingly strong focus among consumers who are growing to appreciate the significance of the gut-energy-brain connection, we’ll also observe a growing market for holistic nutraceutical formulations that support vitality from the inside out. That could mean combining vitamins like B12 with pre-, pro-, and post-biotics for microbiome health integration.”
Cole spotlights the growing focus on the body-mind connection as a key emerging trend in the vitality space. She points out that consumers are increasingly seeking products that support both physical and mental well-being and that help them feel energized, focused, and balanced without separating different aspects of their health.
“That’s one of the reasons why multifunctional solutions are taking off,” Cole reveals. “People don’t want to take six different supplements; they want smart ‘all-in-one’ products that combine popular, complementary ingredients.”
“We’re seeing this demand firsthand with our consumer research on our Vital Trio concept. In our recent survey across North America and Europe, 74% of respondents said Vital Trio addresses unmet needs by offering a convenient way to promote holistic well-being. What’s more, over half said they’d be willing to pay a premium for its high-quality ingredients.”
Focus on vitamins
According to Cole, the choice of bioactive forms is crucial for effectiveness, as the body can only utilize nutrients in active states. Unlike folic acid, a synthetic and inactive form of vitamin B9 requiring conversion, she notes that Kappa Bioscience’s L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF) is immediately usable.
She further states that Optifolin+, a choline-enriched L-5-MTHF, delivers this active form directly, supporting multiple metabolic processes and health benefits.
“For vitamin K2, bioactivity depends on its molecular shape, and, in nature, vitamin K2 as MK-7 features seven double chemical bonds, aligned in a linear configuration called ‘all-trans,’” Cole emphasizes. “This linear molecule acts like a key, unlocking the activity of K-dependent proteins to deliver the vitamin’s benefits for bone and heart health.”Formulators are continuing to advance stable and bioavailable vitamin solutions.
“However, the inherent instability of vitamin K2 means that manufacturing this all-trans molecule can be difficult. This results in some of the chemical bonds present in the alternative ‘cis’ form, which is less bioactive, ultimately reducing the benefits for consumers. This is why our patented K2Vital ingredient is rigorously and independently tested and proven to typically offer 99.7% all-trans isomeric purity.”
Additionally, she says that vitamin K2’s instability poses formulation challenges, as it often degrades when combined with minerals. To address this, Kappa Bioscience’s K2Vital Delta comes in a patented double-microencapsulated form that independent studies confirm is highly stable.
D’Hoore says that HTBA continually seeks innovative ways to harness nature’s benefits and translate them into meaningful health and wellness solutions.
“Compared to other B12 forms, MecobalActive offers superior bioavailability, absorption, and retention for longer-lasting benefits,” he says. “It also stands out by virtue of containing pure methylcobalamin for higher efficacy, fewer impurities for an improved safety profile, and 50% less water than other methylcobalamins for higher concentration with the same dosage, plus, MecobalActive has a five-year shelf life that’s up to 2.5 times longer than other available options.”
“We’re always exploring new ways to channel nature’s goodness into robust health and wellness benefits,” D’Hoore concludes. “When it comes to MecobalActive, our proprietary green chemistry processing methods mean we can obtain a small and homogenous particle size that makes the absorption rate higher than other methylcobalamins at the same dosage.”
