Vitamin D Could Improve Symptoms of Autism in Children
23 Nov 2016 --- Vitamin D supplementation could improve the symptoms of autism in children, according to a new study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
The study is not the first to investigate the link between vitamin D and autism spectrum disorder, with previous studies also showing an association between the two.
The researchers state the results of this new trial indicate that vitamin D supplementation improved the symptoms of autism in the study’s child participants.
Looking at 109 children with autism spectrum disorder, researchers randomly placed the participants into 2 groups.
One group received four months of vitamin D3 supplementation, while the other received a placebo over the same time period.
Discussing the results of the research, Dr. Khaled Saad, the lead author of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry study, says, “Autism symptoms, such as hyperactivity, social withdrawal, and other, improved significantly following vitamin D3 supplementation but not after receiving placebo.”
