Smart Bone-Builder Solution

04/08/05 Gadot Biochemicals Industries, a supplier of crystalline fructose, citrate salts and enrichment minerals has launched Gadolin Calcium, a unique combination of soluble calcium citrate and natural fiber (fructans). It is part of Gadot’s exclusive Enrichment Minerals line, which combines highly bioavailable minerals with other nutrients to achieve a synergistic effect.
Gadolin Calcium comprises a unique combination that provides a better absorption of calcium in the body. Its advantage lies in enhancing the calcium absorption in the body and thus reducing the risks of severe illnesses such as osteoporosis.
Calcium-fortified foods become an essential part of our daily diet. However, the absorption capabilities of calcium in the body reduce with age and cause an increase in the number of bone fractures due to osteoporosis. This encouraged Gadot to develop a smart bone-builder solution.
“We are looking for comprehensive solutions to reduce the risk of health problems like osteoporosis and other important illnesses instead of focusing on a specific ingredient, “ explains Ronny Hacham, VP of Marketing at Gadot. “Therefore, our R&D and Marketing departments developed advanced formulations that aim at enhancing the minerals’ absorption in the body.”
Inulin Benefits
Consisting of relatively short chains of sugar molecules, inulin acts as a soluble fiber providing the type of bulk that aids the body’s absorption of minerals such as calcium or magnesium in the small intestine.
Fructans such as inulin, are beneficial for weight management programs as they have various physiological effects such as suppressing appetite, inhibiting fat production, stimulating glycolysis, and reducing lipids – all resulting in a healthier body and circulatory system.
Moreover, the fructans improve HDL/LDL ratios and help maintaining high energy levels while controlling the caloric intake.
Increasing Calcium Absorption
According to recent studies, organic calcium like citrate is more bioavailable than inorganic calcium like carbonate or phosphate.
Under normal circumstances, only about one third of dietary calcium is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract.
Ingestion of inulin and oligofructose can make an excellent contribution to both mechanisms by improving calcium intake from the diet. Fermentation of inulin and oligofructose in the colon produces short chain fatty acids, which cause the pH of the colon content to drop. Most of the calcium present as insoluble salts becomes highly soluble and therefore can be better absorbed by our body.
Combining a highly soluble calcium citrate with fructans leads to even higher bioavailability and a synergistic effect is achieved.
“Gadolin Calcium is a win-win combination,” says Mr. Hacham. “It can tackle the decline in bone density, help in weight management, promote overall health and reduce the impact of several important health risks factors.”
Gadolin Calcium Composition
An adequate intake for total fibers in foods is set at 25-38 g/day. The average consumption is approx 50% below this level. This means that in order to meet the Dietary Fiber’s RDA, a supplement of approx 9-15 g/day is required.
Since Calcium's RDA is 1000-1200mg per day, the optimal calcium/ fructans ratio in the supplement should be of at least: 1 part of calcium per 10 parts of fructans.
Gadolin Calcium is an excellent choice for producers that decide to develop functional foods and beverages.
They can position their product for menopause women, osteoporosis prevention and also as dietetic foods or weight control.
Fortifying Beverages with Gadolin
Gadolin Calcium is highly soluble product. As such, it perfectly fits for fortification of a wide range of beverages, especially, clear beverages.
In order to get 100% of calcium RDA per liter, 24gr of Gadolin Calcium should be added to 1 litter of beverage formulation.
Such quantity will also contribute approximately 50% of the dietary fiber RDA.
