Resveratrol is a polyphenolic phytoalexin, produced by certain plants as part of their defence system against disease and infection. Found in the skin of grapes and in small amounts in peanuts and mulberries, resveratrol is believed to be responsible for the so-called French Paradox, which claims that French people, who consume a high fat diet maintain relatively low mortality rates from coronary heart disease compared to other western countries, because of their high consumption of red wine. More recently, resveratrol is shown to mimic calorie restriction, the only proven scientific way to extend life.
