Polyphenols for focus: Kemin’s cognitive booster Neumentix approved for supplements in Brazil

12 May 2021 --- Kemin Industries’ nutrition and health product for cognitive improvement, Neumentix, has received approval as a bioactive ingredient for use in dietary supplements in Brazil. 

The Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health published a resolution authorizing Kemin’s cognitive support product for use in dietary supplements as a source of phenolic compounds. 

“The approval of Neumentix in Brazil means that our ingredient is safe and has high quality. To have one more ingredient approved by Anvisa will increase our revenue and presence into big potential clients,” Rosemeire Shiraishi, sales manager for Latin America at Kemin Human Nutrition and Health, tells NutritionInsight.

“Brazil is a very promising market for Kemin, particularly within the global nutritional health and wellness products industry,” notes José Piccolotto, president for Kemin Human Nutrition and Health. 

“We are happy that Anvisa has recognized the safety of Neumentix and the significant amount of R&D that went into its safety and efficacy. 

Improving attention
Neumentix is sourced from Kemin’s patented spearmint that yields more than 50 antioxidant polyphenols, which may help improve focus and attention, the company says. 

Brazil is a promising market for Kemin, especially within the global nutritional health and wellness products industry.

According to Innova Market Insights, supplements featuring a brain or mood health claim have seen major growth over the last five years, with this trend looking set to continue. The top associated claims are related to energy and stamina, although immune and heart health claims are also both popular.

Neumentix also has self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

With over 16 peer-reviewed scientific publications and previous clinical research, Neumentix is shown to improve working memory and the ability to sustain attention and focus, as well as physical performance associated with agility and reaction time.

Polyphenols focus
Kemin released earlier this year a sleep aid ingredient formulated with a unique blend of polyphenols. Branded DailyZz, the ingredient has proven efficacious in clinical trials and is being marketed as addressing modern lifestyles that produce ever-prevalent sleep disorders.

Moreover, a study commissioned by the company showed that Kemin’s DailyZz ingredient may improve sleep quality and daytime functioning in healthy individuals with occasional sleep complaints. 

Previously, Kemin received approvals in the EU and Brazil, allowing its algae-sourced beta-glucan ingredient BetaVia Complete to be placed on both markets. 

Furthermore, Kemin has been granted a US patent on the use of its BetaVia’s beta 1,3 glucans for modulating human immune function and treating intestinal inflammation.
